The Navy is investigating what caused a sailor aboard the USS Carter Hall to fall into the ship’s well deck, resulting in fatal injuries.
According to an Expeditionary Strike Group 2 news release:
“Following lifesaving efforts by the ship’s emergency medical team, the sailor was evacuated via Navy helicopter to Pitt Memorial Trauma Center in Greenville, N.C. where he was pronounced dead.”
The Military Times reports the USS Carter Hall is currently off the coast of North Carolina conducting training exercises as part of the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group.
The family of the unnamed sailor has been notified, but the Navy won't release his identity for another 24 hours.
