An Afghan soldier killed a NATO International Security Assistance Force service member today at Kandahar Air Field in what's being called an insider attack, according to Stars and Stripes.
Jawed Faisal, spokesman for the Kandahar governor’s office, told Stars and Stripes the Afghan soldier was placed under arrested after the shooting.
AFP is reporting that the soldier killed in the attack was Slovakian. Three Slovakian soldiers were also injured in the insider shooting, according to The Associated Press.
Elsewhere in Afghanistan, the blast from a Taliban-planted roadside bomb killed 17 Afghan civilians in the western part of the country, according to the A.P.
The bloodshed in Afghanistan comes just hours after the New York Times reported President Obama is considering speeding up the withdrawal of U.S. troops in the war-torn country, due to his unraveling relationship with Afghan President Hamid Karzai:
As it stands, the number of American troops in Afghanistan — around 63,000 — is scheduled to go down to 34,000 by February 2014. The White House has said the vast majority of troops would be out of Afghanistan by the end of that year, although it now appears that the schedule could accelerate to bring the bulk of the troops — if not all of them — home by next summer, as the annual fighting season winds down.
