People across San Diego County will mark Memorial Day at commemorative ceremonies and events to honor those who served and those who died fighting for America.
Coronado
Hundreds of people are expected to attend a remembrance ceremony and wreath laying at 10 a.m. on Monday at Star Park Circle in Coronado. The event, hosted by Veterans of Foreign Wars, will include guest of honor and speaker Vice Adm. David Buss. The ceremony will conclude with a 21-gun rifle salute and the playing of Taps.
Fort Rosecrans
At Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, small American flags have been placed at each gravesite to honor those who have served. A ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. near the tip of Point Loma; a national moment of remembrance is set to take place at 3 p.m. Public visitation hours on Monday are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
USS Midway Museum
At 12:30 p.m., a ceremony will be held on board the USS Midway. The ceremony, hosted by American Legion San Diego Downtown Post 492, will include a vintage aircraft flyover, music by Bonita vista High School and a speech by Charles H. Spielman, founder and owner of Hall Of Heroes, a private Military Museum.
Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial
A special ceremony at Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial at 2 p.m will include a special plaque presentation honoring Sgt. Rafael Peralta, USMC. The local San Diego Marine was awarded the Navy Cross for making the ultimate sacrifice saving the lives of fellow Marines. The event will feature Keynote Speaker Brigadier General, James Bierman, and participating will be Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) Brass Quintet, MCRD Color Guard Rifle Team and a fly-over by the San Diego T-34 Performance Aircraft Team.
Lakeside
A day of remembrance, hosted by the VFW, VVMF (Vietnam Veterans Memorial fund) and IAVA (Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America) is set to take place at 12650 Lindo Lane in Lakeside. The ceremony begins and 9 a.m., followed by a BBQ and candle light vigil to remember those who died both on and off the battlefield and the families left behind.
Kensington
The Kensington Memorial Day Parade procession will include children from area schools marching behind their respective school banners, assorted clowns, dancers, local politicians, the antique car with local crowned beauties, and the Optimist Club's band. The parade route is along Marlborough Drive between Adams Ave and Palisades Rd.
