As the 13-year-long war in Afghanistan draws down, the last Camp Pendleton Marines and sailors to serve in that conflict are slated to return home Thursday.

The homecoming is planned for 1:30 p.m. PST.

The Washington Post reports the Marines' "formal mission" in Afghanistan ended with the transfer of Camp Leatherneck and Great Britain's Camp Bastion to the Afghan military on Oct. 26.

The final U.S. Marine Corps command departed Afghanistan on Oct. 27.

According to I Marine Expeditionary Force, the Marines from Camp Pendleton had many responsibilities as they wrapped up operations in Helmand province:

In addition to conducting combat operations, these Marines and Sailors focused their efforts on preparing the Afghanistan National Security Forces to assume responsibility for Helmand and Nimroz provinces while completing the retrograde and transfer of all coalition bases.

The Associated Press estimates, based on Marine Corps records, that roughly 76,000 Marines have served in Afghanistan since 2001.
