Two Russian Tu-95 Bear bomber planes came within 50 miles of the Northern California coast, shortly after four of the Russian Tu-95 planes entered the Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) near Alaska. None of the planes entered U.S. air space, and military officials dismissed the incident as "routine."

Naval Aircrewman Mechanical 3rd Class Shannon Elizabeth Nunez, 22, died June 8 in Hawaii after jumping off a cliff into Maunalua Bay and getting carried away by the ocean currents. Nunez was from Whittier, Calif.

Army Spc. Tinita Taylor has become the first woman to complete the Army's Jungle Operations Training Course. Taylor graduated from the course June 6, and her next goal is to become the first female to complete Army Ranger school.
