Libby Jury Hears Two Sides of CIA Leak Case

Opening statements are heard in the trial of Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Vice President Cheney's former chief of staff. Libby is charged with perjury and obstruction of justice in the Valerie Plame Wilson leak investigation.

Mrs. Wilson, as she is referred to at the trial, is the wife of former ambassador Joseph Wilson. Her role as an undercover CIA operative was leaked to the press after her husband accused the Bush administration of misleading the public in the run-up to the Iraq war.

Libby is accused of lying to federal investigators about his conversations with reporters regarding Plame. His defense team maintains that the charges are based on mistakes — by Libby or by journalists he spoke to — instead of lies he told to hamper the investigation.
