Tijuana struggles with growing asylum crowd
Last weekend, the situation at the San Ysidro Port of Entry escalated as a group of asylum seekers ran toward the border, prompting U.S. Border Patrol agents to fire tear gas into Mexico. Tensions have calmed in recent days and some asylum seekers say the incident has motivated them to return to Central America. In Tijuana, the main shelter housing migrants is over capacity and struggling to meet basic needs.

2007 firestorm legal fight
More than 11 years after the destructive San Diego County wildfires of 2007, San Diego Gas and Electric is still trying to pass on nearly $400 million in related costs to ratepayers. A panel of district court judges recently upheld a state ruling that denied SDG&E’s request. But the utility is asking the state Supreme Court to weigh in, claiming one of the judges involved in the recent ruling has a conflict of interest.

The California Dream public media collaboration recently looked at high pressure tactics being used on older homeowners to sell below market value or take on unnecessary home renovation loans. In one case, a San Diego man with limited mental capacity was talked into a series of loans that caused his property tax bill to skyrocket. He is now at risk for losing his home.
