Strong Santa Ana Winds Expected In San Diego County, Forecasters Say

Strong and gusty winds out of the east will blow through the valleys and mountains of San Diego County this week, according to the National Weather Service.

The agency scheduled a high wind watch for the valleys and mountains from late Thursday night through Friday night. Forecasters also issued a fire weather watch for the same period, saying the strong winds would be accompanied by low humidity levels of around 8 to 13 percent.

During the advisory period, residents can expect sustained winds of 25 to 30 miles per hour, with gusts up to 55 mph.

"The winds will make driving difficult, especially for motorists with high profile vehicles,'' according to a NWS advisory. "Watch for broken tree limbs and power lines.''

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
