Peter Sinclair, as Media Director of the Dark Snow Project, an international scientific effort focused on the Greenland ice sheet, has spent a lot of time on and around the Big Ice with top-level science teams. Mr. Sinclair will talk about what scientists have been learning about the dynamics and unique vulnerability of ice sheets to climate change. The presentation will include vivid video, interviews, and drone footage shot on location over the last decade. Mr. Sinclair will also describe the ongoing war to site clean energy across the American heartland and where the war to decarbonize America will be won or lost in the coming decade. Monday, Oct. 21, 2024 at 10 p.m. on KPBS TV Stream now with the PBS app. In the 1950s and '60s, the U.S. government conducted a series of nuclear tests in the Nevada desert. The resulting fallout would kick off a decades-long debate over cancer rates, the costs of patriotism, and the responsibility of a nation to protect its citizens. The film chronicles the history of the testing program, and shares the stories of Utahans who lived downwind from the Nevada site.

From the KPBS weekend arts preview: Bread and Salt is open late with several receptions on Saturday, Aug. 12, during Barrio Art Crawl. In the main gallery is a new exhibit from Alejandro Zacarías' "Evocaciones II," featuring new works by the Tijuana-based sculptor. Zacarías is known for his assemblage work, including pieces that work with a lot of found and scavenged materials. —Julia Dixon Evans About the artist: Alexander Zacarias Soto was born in Guadalajara Jalisco and lives since 1970 in Tijuana, where he has developed his work. Self-taught visual artist who since the early 90's participates and organizes multidisciplinary art events, exhibitions and festivals. (Painting, installation, performance, video, photography and object art) Work for which he is considered one of the protagonists of the emergence of contemporary border art in Tijuana. His work is based on assembly, he has worked with techniques ranging from painting, recycling, intervention and installation of public and private space. His work has participated in more than forty exhibitions, biennials or group shows in Tijuana and in other cities in Mexico and the United States, places such as the Tijuana Cultural Center, the Rufino Tamayo Museum and the Tijuana-San Diego InSite 97 site-specific festival. The Haunted Amusement Park is a HAUNTED Scare Trail set on the desolate grounds of the iconic San Diego Amusement park Marshal Scotty's Playland. The once joyful sounds of fun and laughter are now replaced with screams of terror as visitors make their way through the remnants of the carnival rides from the 1960s. The haunted scare trail takes you under the old Roller Coaster, around the Ferris Wheel and in to the Bumper Cars where you will put on 3D glasses to experience out-of-this-world visuals. You will then have to find your way through the Circus maze before the side show freaks find you. But don't rest yet, you will still have to zig zag your way out of the sleep away camp cabin. See the original haunted ride repair shop, and make your way through the old attraction Graveyard where you will see the broken down cars from the roller coaster, a race car, a ferris wheel gondola still waiting for repair from the undead fix-it crew. The haunted Amusement Park also features a house of curiosities, a truly Haunted House of Horrors, a cemetery, a slaughterhouse, and much more on your nearly 1 mile walk through the spooky grounds of The Haunted Amusement Park. The San Diego French Film Festival, presented by the Alliance Française San Diego, is back for its fourth edition from June 2nd to June 5th, with a glamorous opening ceremony on June 2nd at the high-end movie theater THE LOT in the heart of La Jolla, followed by the “Festival days”, three days of screenings at the Reading Cinemas Town Square in Clairemont. The SDFFF is an opportunity for the San Diego francophone community to come together to celebrate the richness and diversity of the French language, culture, and gastronomy, and to experience the magic of cinema in all its glory. Four days to celebrate francophone cinema The movie selection includes award winning short and feature films with a rich mix of history, adventure, biopic and environmental documentaries. The festival will kick off with a red-carpet opening ceremony on Sunday, June 2nd, at THE LOT. Attendees are invited to enjoy the screening of the acclaimed movie “The Three Musketeers: Milady” (2023) which clinched the prestigious César award. This cinematic masterpiece, co-produced by France, Germany, Belgium, and Spain, is directed by Martin Bourboulon and boasts a stellar cast including Eva Green, François Civil, Vincent Cassel, Pio Marmaï, and Romain Duris. Serving as the eagerly anticipated second installment of the epic saga, adapted from Alexandre Dumas' timeless novel, it follows "The Three Musketeers: D'Artagnan" (2023) (which will be shown as a pre festival event on May 3rd). Pet portraits will mingle with family ancestors; faces of joy may contrast with downcast eyes of sorrow; celebrities draw the eye, while everyday people have a brief moment of attention. Come take a deeper look at the story told by each portrait and self-portrait. You'll look into the eyes of real and imaginary individuals and perhaps see yourself in their story.
