Come and unlock the magic of music & clay as you embark on a creative journey! December 17 from 1 – 3:30 p.m. Do you know what an ocarina is? It’s like a flute, but instead of a tube, the sound is produced in a chamber. Join us for an immersive and hands-on ceramic workshop where you’ll uncover the ancient art of crafting your very own ocarina, a whimsical and enchanting musical instrument. Throughout this comprehensive workshop, you’ll learn the step-by-step process of creating an ocarina from raw clay to a beautiful musical instrument. Under the guidance of our instructor, Israel Basurto, you’ll delve into the world of ceramics, exploring essential techniques, and shaping clay with your hands. From molding the body of the ocarina to intricately carving the finger holes and crafting the mouthpiece, you’ll acquire the skills to bring your musical vision to life. Embrace your creativity as you personalize your ocarina with a variety of decorative techniques, such as incising patterns, adding texture, and experimenting with underglazes (…all time permitting! Some folks work faster than others). By the end of the workshop, you’ll have not only crafted a one-of-a-kind ocarina but also developed a deeper appreciation for the ancient craft of ceramics. Surfing Madonna Oceans Project is pleased to present “Save the Ocean” a juried regional show about our beautiful, fragile and fascinating world. 60+ artists from across California will be selected to showcase their work on the environmental theme during the month of October 2023 with the reception on Saturday October 14, 2023. Artists and Poets will be awarded with cash prizes for their exceptional work. The show will host all mediums of wall art including: painting, fabric, collage, assemblage and photography. The show will be juried by Cathy Carey, Cheryl Ehlers and Mike Redman. There will be art and poetry awards and poetry readings at the reception on Saturday October 14, 2023 from 4 - 6 p.m. Artists may enter up to 3 entries for $30. ALL work must be original, No Giclees. Ballet Collective San Diego presents “Heartbeats,” Sept. 16 at 5:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center in La Jolla. “Heartbeats” is our third live performance at The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center in La Jolla. This evening will feature contemporary ballet works by local choreographers Tylor Bradshaw, Reka Gyulai, Silken Kelly, and Emily Miller. “Heartbeats” touches the pulse of what is important to each choreographer and dancer - the rapture in hearing beautiful music, what is real and honest between two people sharing space, and the power of many bodies breathing together as one. Ving Simpson’s intent in creating art is to unfold the inherent nature of something, an idea, a rule, a notion, a person, or a thing, and uncover an artistic understanding of the essence of its existence. He uses his artistic process to edify himself, using what he considers an alternate channel of perception to circumvent the folded (Cartesian, analytic, logical, linguistic) approach to knowledge. Though difficult to describe the process in words, Ving has discovered that a number of topics have yielded to this process. The idea of “numbers” deepens, the quality of “warriors” clarifies, the enigma of “space and time” unravels, and the universe drops some of its inscrutability. Ving uses this artistic frame of mind, where form and color, material and method join with unfolded intent to infiltrate the big questions of life in this big universe of ours. The artwork is what is left over.
