About JP Balmat Jean-Paul (JP) Balmat is the award-winning educator and performer leading the internationally recognized music program at Mission Bay. His award-winning groups have been invited to perform throughout California, New Orleans and most recently Japan. Jean-Paul is an accomplished educator, performer, composer and arranger. As a professional saxophonist, he performs regularly in San Diego. He is artistic director of the Euphoria Brass Band and his recordings and compositions have been nominated for San Diego Music Awards the past six years. In 2019 and 2020 Euphoria Brass Band won the San Diego Music Award for “Best Jazz.” Most recently he has performed with New Orleans trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis, drummer Marvin “Smitty” Smith (Tonight Show Band) and GRAMMY award winning and nominated musicians Oscar Hernandez, Francisco Torres (Poncho Sanchez, Gordon Goodwin) and Javier Cabanillas (Pacific Mambo Orchestra, Cabanijazz Project). Downtown’s The Whiskey House, which holds the Guinness World Record for Most Varieties of Whiskey, is hosting its February Whiskey Club Event on Tuesday, February 27 with Basil Hayden® of Clermont, Ky. The evening begins at 6:00 p.m., and it includes a 1.5-oz pour of each of the four featured whiskeys (Toast, Rye, Cask Wine, 10-Year) and discussions with a Basil Hayden representative. Food is also included in the price of admission, and the menu features a charcuterie board, house-made sausage board, and filet sliders. Tickets are $70 in advance. Each year the ARCS Foundation, San Diego Chapter, a non-profit organization led entirely by women, hosts a Scientist of the Year fundraiser to honor a preeminent local scientist. This year’s honoree, Dr. Terry Sejnowski, is one of the world’s foremost computer scientists and computational neuroscientists, whose visionary and ingenious work on neural networks laid the foundation for the machine learning and AI revolution that is taking the world by storm today. Dr. Sejnowski is head of Salk Institute’s Computational Neurobiology Laboratory and holder of the Frances Crick Chair. He is also a distinguished professor at UC San Diego’s School of Biological Sciences, where he is co-director of the Institute for Neural Computation. ARCS San Diego invites you to join them for a celebration of science and scientists that is set for Saturday, April 27 (4 - 8 p.m.) at The Conrad Performing Arts Center in La Jolla. In addition to honoring Dr. Sejnowski, the program will pay tribute to this year’s ARCS Scholars – all 50 of them – along with distinguished ARCS Scholar alumnus, Dr. Randall Kelley, who has served as Director of Data Science and Machine Learning at several major corporations. All funds raised at this event will support future ARCS Scholars. Through their research, these talented Scholars make outstanding contributions to advance science and keep America competitive on the global stage, which is the ARCS mission.
