World Chamber Jazz Ensemble Quarteto Nuevo merges Western classical, eastern European folk, Latin and jazz with an organic feel that packs a wallop! For this special concert, the group will be joined by Grammy Award-winning Jazz Pianist and Arranger Bill Cunliffe. In addition to their world fusion program, they will performing new movements from their Jazz Road Suite (Western States) commissioned by South Arts, and works by Bill Cunliffe. 'Distorted Thoughts' is a solo exhibition by Muse, exploring the human psyche and its intricacies in an attempt to understand and accept ourselves and ultimately, humanity. Muse communicates through various mediums such as photography, embroidery, performance art, interactive installation, and clothing. This body of work explores the human psyche through the use of symbolism in fashion, photography, and performance art. It aims to guide and invite the viewer to delve into their own emotional state. In doing so, the viewer is able to confront the spectrum of self. About the artist Muse is a Mexican American multidisciplinary artist who specializes in fashion and storytelling. The sewing machine is Muse’s paintbrush, and clothing is her canvas. With an extensive background in both subconscious and conscious exploration, as well as intensive philosophical and psychological study, Muse has developed a method to invoke visceral truly unique and powerful artistic vision. Through her work, Muse creates a transformative space that encourages the viewer to explore their inner worlds and embark on a journey of self-discovery and acceptance.

Come chat with artist Lewis deSoto about Conquest, now installed at the San Diego Automotive Museum. With his automotive-based sculpture Conquest (2004), artist Lewis deSoto examines the relationship between his Cahuilla background and his distant ancestor (conquistador Hernando de Soto) within the context of the automotive industry, which in its branding appropriates terms, imagery, and aesthetics related to the brutal conquest of the Americas. Conquest subtly interrogates the mythologies and identities of Southern California through the lens of midcentury capitalism. Per Mr. deSoto, "Conquest is a project to trace the ironic threads of DeSoto: automobile, conquistador, myself and our culture. It proposes that the metaphor of history is a set of divergent parallel universes in which to traverse and communicate with." Casa Familiar’s groundbreaking 'Invisible Traditions' is part of the Official Calendar of World Design Capital San Diego-Tijuana 2024. Invisible Traditions marks the first Dia de la Mujer (International Women's Day) exhibition hosted binationally in Tijuana and San Diego. It highlights Black, Indigenous, and People of Color women and non-binary designers and artists from both sides of the border who use their creativity to bring hidden practices, beliefs, and customs to light. Curated by Katalina Silva and Arzu Ozkal, Invisible Traditions focuses on how certain socio-cultural practices could fade into obscurity or become less visible in everyday life, despite their significance. These practices contribute to a sense of belonging among members of groups that are marginalized and subject to inequality. Invisible Traditions is a critical reflection on how design choices can perpetuate harmful stereotypes and support oppressive systems. The exhibition challenges designers to consider the ethical implications of their work, urging them to question embedded narratives, symbols, and messages. What can I as an individual know? What seems out of reach? In fact, how does “knowing” come about? In everyday life, one faces such questions constantly. One is perplexed by events, by the opinions of others, with deciding how to act in circumstances with immediate or more long-term implications. In contrast, other moments can feel immediately “right”. There’s no friction. Living in this world of disrupted comfort, we seek perspective. KNOWING / NOT KNOWING is an 80-minute musical work for narrator, recorded actors, live and filmed performers, projected imagery, San Diego’s SACRA/PROFANA Chorus, and 8-channel sound movement. The work’s text has nine sections spanning Infancy and Individuation through Communality and Knowledge. Its text draws from more than two dozen sources ranging from ancient Persian and Indian wisdom, through the contemporary voices of Chinua Achebe, Wallace Stevens, James Baldwin, Simone Weil, Albert Camus, Toni Morrison, Carlo Rovelli, David Brooks, Amanda Gorman and many others.
