On Thursday, October 19th, Mavericks Beach Club will be hosting their biggest charity event of the year, the SDFD Mustache Madness. The event includes live music, mustache contests, passed apps and drinks, one-of-a-kind silent auction items, raffle prizes, and much more, all in support of Firefighter Aid. Firefighter Aid’s mission is to provide charitable assistance to firefighters and their families in times of need and to promote awareness of firefighter health and safety issues, and the impacts they have upon their families and communities. The event takes place from 5:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. Tickets, which are $20 with 100% of proceeds going to Firefighter Aid, can be purchased here!

Learn a little more about our VolunBEERS event: Our March VolunBEERS is dedicated to our four legged friends. Attendees will make no-sew blankets and toys for our furry friends at Rescuing Cujo. The mission of Rescuing Cujo is to help abused, neglected, abandoned dogs by providing them with shelter, care and affection until a loving home is found where they can live in comfort and safety. They do this by working with other shelters and rescues, and temporarily house dogs through their foster program at their facility in Jamul, California. They believe all dogs can be saved and provided with a loving home, no matter what size or breed. Space and supplies are limited, so we recommend buying your tickets early. General Admission is $25 for the Lassie ticket which includes project supplies + one non-alcoholic beverage. Drink Deals are $30 for the Scooby-Doo ticket which includes project supplies + one pour from Harland Brewing, or $50 for the Cujo ticket which includes project supplies + up to three pours from Harland Brewing. Local celebrity chef and “Master Chef” winner and judge Chef Claudia Sandoval is serving as the Culinary Director for this incredible event, and has curated a star-studded lineup that includes international celebrity chefs from the United States, Mexico, and as far as Switzerland, each renowned for their culinary prowess and innovative creations. Culinary Concerto will bring together 24 internationally acclaimed chefs preparing 24 unique menus tableside, with incredible pairings from 24 wineries from Paso Robles and Valle de Guadalupe. Every July, campers, counselors and administrators gather on 84 acres of hilly woods in the woods of western New York state that has been home to a Ukrainian summer camp called “Novyi Sokil” since 1950.

This engaging film festival runs in-person from January 1 through February 11, 2024, and continues virtually from Feb. 11-18. The SDIJFF showcases a selection of the best contemporary Jewish films. Thirty-four feature films and 28 short films will be screened and there will be plenty of free in-person-only screenings at the David & Dorothea Garfield Theatre at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center in UTC. Film enthusiasts can attend in-person screenings at the David & Dorothea Garfield Theatre, while virtual film screenings are available on demand beginning on Feb. 11 and will remain available through Feb 18. Limited, free in-person screenings will also be available. This festival is known to be one of the most prestigious Jewish film festivals in the country. Valentine's Day is around the corner, and a local nonprofit is celebrating the season of love through a variety of artwork. St. Madeleine Sophie's Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating and empowering individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, is hosting the "Gotta Have Heart" art show on Friday, February 9 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. This free public reception will present the Sophie's artists' latest Valentine's Day-inspired exhibit that runs until the end of March. The student artists will showcase their love-themed pieces, including a weather-inspired collection of umbrellas embellished with original designs, paper mache´ sculptures, contemporary jewelry, heart prints, mosaics, and a Weaving Rainbow. Guests can expect a showcase of colorful and creative works done by students of St. Madeline's Sophie's Center. Artwork sales directly support Sophie’s artists and art program, with 40% going to the artists and 60% to the art program. Sophie’s Gallery is an art studio where adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities are given the opportunity and tools needed to realize their full creative potential. Students are taught a variety of media, including print-making, jewelry-making, painting, charcoal, pastels, fabric arts, and more. All of the classes are taught by professional artists. No experience necessary. Ages 16+ welcome! This 2-part workshop is designed to teach students the basics of woodworking with hand tools. Students will construct a wooden plant stand using half-lap, dowels, and notched joinery. Students learn how to safely use chisels and a mallet, along with other hand tools such as a hand saw, card scraper, block planes, and spokeshaves. We will show sharpening techniques for chisels and how to apply finish to the plant stand. Materials will be provided. Jonesy Jones is an internationally touring entertainer who indulges in her craft to provide a phenomenal experience for the audience. For over 10 years, she has been a vocalist, trombonist, bongocera artist, tap dancer, radio voice over artist, model, and the lead vocalist for the Crowned Jewelz Band. Her high flying energy on stage can be felt throughout the entire performance, and her soulful rhythm and melodies are sure to lull any audience into a feel good vibe. Jonesy Jones has been involved in dance since the age of 10. Yolanda began teaching beginner Tap dance and Hip-Hop dance under Lynn Brown at Prima Dance Studios at the age of 16. She also taught modern hip-hop and Tap Dance at Midtown Dance Studios and Mobile Contemporary Dance Studios.

Though this class is offered as part of the Certificate in Memoir Writing, there is no pre-requisite to join this class. All students, members, and nonmembers are encouraged to enroll. Agents often share that what makes a memoir stand out in the marketplace is a strong author’s voice. In this workshop we will uncover the soul of the writing with fun and interactive voice techniques to make the storytelling as dynamic as possible. Students will also learn how to craft smooth transitions as well as how to enter and exit a chapter or scene. Participants will gain a better understanding how to create a seamless text that takes the reader between past memories (flashbacks) and present-day experiences and observations. We will work on bringing the theme of the piece to life so that the manuscript will resonate with universal meaning. Symbolism will also be explored as a way to deepen the writing and flesh out the theme of your book. Class structure: Except for the first class, the first hour will be lecture and the second hour will be read and critique where participants can workshop their material or class assignments. Tone of class: We strive to create a supportive, nurturing environment where participants feel encouraged to share, risk and connect to their most creative self.
