Yiddishland and The House of Israel are honored to host a screening of the silent film “The City without Jews,” a 1924 Austrian masterpiece, directed and produced by H.K. Breslauer. The film is based on a bestselling homonymous dystopian novel by Hugo Bettauer, which portrays the fictional Austrian city of “Utopia” (a thinly-disguised stand-in for Vienna), which passed an antisemitic law, forcing all Jews to leave the country. Although at first the decision was welcomed and met with celebration, as time went by, Utopia’s citizens faced an ongoing economic impoverishment and cultural decline that forced them to reconsider their decision and wonder whether to invite the Jews back. Though darkly comedic in tone and stylistically influenced by German Expressionism, the film nonetheless contains ominous and eerily realistic sequences, such as shots of freight trains transporting Jews out of the city. It is considered to be one of the few surviving Austrian expressionist films, being then the subject of research and interest both in Austria and around the world. We will have the unique opportunity to enjoy live original music by world-renowned Klezmer violinist Alicia Svigals and silent film pianist Donald Sosin. Alicia Svigals Violinist/composer Alicia Svigals is the world’s leading Klezmer fiddler and a founder of the Grammy-winning Klezmatics. She has performed with and written music for violinist Itzhak Perlman and has worked with the Kronos Quartet, playwrights Tony Kushner and Eve Enseler, poet Allen Ginsburgh, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, Debbie Friedman and Chava Albershteyn. Svigals was awarded a Foundation for Jewish Culture commission for her original score to the 1918 film The Yellow Ticket and is a MacDowell fellow. With jazz pianist Uli Geissendoerfer, she recently released Beregovsky Suite a recording of contemporary interpretations of Klezmer music from a long-lost Soviet Jewish archive. Her CD Fidl (1996) reawakened Klezmer fiddle tradition. Her newest CD is Beregovsky Suit: Klezmer Reimagined, with Jazz pianist Uli Geissendoerfer-an original take on long-lost Jewish music from Ukraine. Donald Sosin Pianist/composer Donald Sosin grew up in Rye, New York and Munich, and has performed his scores for silent films, often with his wife, singer/percussionist Joanna Seaton, at Lincoln Center, MoMA, BAM, the National Gallery, at major film festivals in New York, San Francisco, Telluride, Hollywood, Pordenone, Bologna, Shanghai, Bangkok, Berlin, Vienna, Moscow, and Jecheon, South Korea and many college campuses. He has worked with Alexander Payne, Isabella Rossellini, Dick Hyman, Jonathan Tunick, Comden and Green, Martin Charnin, Mitch Leigh, and Cy Coleman, and has played for Mikhael Baryshnikov, Mary Travers, Marni Nixon, David Alan Grier, Howie Mandel, Geula Gill, Donna McKechnie and many others. He records for Criterion, Kino, Milestone, Flicker Alley and European labels, and his scores are heard frequently on TCM. Sosin has had commissions from MoMA, the Chicago Symphony Chorus, the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra and the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra. He lives in rural Connecticut with his family. On Thursday, October 19th, Mavericks Beach Club will be hosting their biggest charity event of the year, the SDFD Mustache Madness. The event includes live music, mustache contests, passed apps and drinks, one-of-a-kind silent auction items, raffle prizes, and much more, all in support of Firefighter Aid. Firefighter Aid’s mission is to provide charitable assistance to firefighters and their families in times of need and to promote awareness of firefighter health and safety issues, and the impacts they have upon their families and communities. The mission of Rescuing Cujo is to help abused, neglected, abandoned dogs by providing them with shelter, care and affection until a loving home is found where they can live in comfort and safety. They do this by working with other shelters and rescues, and temporarily house dogs through their foster program at their facility in Jamul, California. They believe all dogs can be saved and provided with a loving home, no matter what size or breed. Space and supplies are limited, so we recommend buying your tickets early. General Admission is $25 for the Lassie ticket which includes project supplies + one non-alcoholic beverage. This engaging film festival runs in-person from January 1 through February 11, 2024, and continues virtually from Feb. 11-18. The SDIJFF showcases a selection of the best contemporary Jewish films. Thirty-four feature films and 28 short films will be screened and there will be plenty of free in-person-only screenings at the David & Dorothea Garfield Theatre at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center in UTC. Film enthusiasts can attend in-person screenings at the David & Dorothea Garfield Theatre, while virtual film screenings are available on demand beginning on Feb. 11 and will remain available through Feb 18. On Saturday, October 21, join Olivewood Gardens and Learning Center for an evening celebrating Hispanic Heritage/Latinx in National City, sponsored by Maker's Mark. In honor of The Kitchenistas®, the nonprofit will celebrate culture with garden-to-cup cocktails from Maker’s Mark, using ingredients from Olivewood Gardens; and Kitchenista/Chef Aureny Aranda and Kitchenistas will create a dinner using fall seasonal ingredients, including corn, wheat, and barley. All proceeds will go toward supporting Olivewood’s free community programs. Olivewood Gardens and Learning Center promotes health equity, food access and community building. By supporting this Hispanic/Latinx dinner event, the organization can continue to provide resources, programming and healthy food access to the community it serves. Olivewood works alongside the community of National City and surrounding neighborhoods to improve access to fresh foods and vegetables and combat inequities that disproportionately affect communities of color. Valentine's Day is around the corner, and a local nonprofit is celebrating the season of love through a variety of artwork. St. Madeleine Sophie's Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating and empowering individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, is hosting the "Gotta Have Heart" art show on Friday, February 9 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. This free public reception will present the Sophie's artists' latest Valentine's Day-inspired exhibit that runs until the end of March. The student artists will showcase their love-themed pieces, including a weather-inspired collection of umbrellas embellished with original designs, paper mache´ sculptures, contemporary jewelry, heart prints, mosaics, and a Weaving Rainbow. Guests can expect a showcase of colorful and creative works done by students of St. Madeline's Sophie's Center. Artwork sales directly support Sophie’s artists and art program, with 40% going to the artists and 60% to the art program. Sophie’s Gallery is an art studio where adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities are given the opportunity and tools needed to realize their full creative potential. Students are taught a variety of media, including print-making, jewelry-making, painting, charcoal, pastels, fabric arts, and more. All of the classes are taught by professional artists.
