The Barona Band of Mission Indians proudly invites the San Diego community to celebrate Native American heritage at the 51st Annual Barona Powwow over Labor Day Weekend. The three-day cultural celebration starts on Friday, September 1 with gourd dancing at 6 p.m. and a dramatic grand entry of dancers in colorful regalia at 8 p.m. The Barona Powwow will continue Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. Admission and parking are free. Hundreds of Native American participants of all ages and from across the country will showcase their dancing skills as they compete in a variety of categories, such as the Fancy Shawl Dance and Grass Dance, for more than $75,000 in prize money. In addition to beautiful regalia and dancing, spectators will be able to enjoy Hand Drum contests, singing and music, popular Native American food including delicious Indian fry bread tacos, arts and crafts, and handcrafted jewelry. The Barona Powwow will be held at the Barona Sports Complex located on the Barona Indian Reservation just one mile north of the Barona Resort & Casino on Wildcat Canyon Road in Lakeside. Join us every other month as OMA transforms itself into an artist’s studio with workshops and skill-building exercises led by distinguished professor and arts educator Robin Douglas. Pointillism and Dot Paintings. Application of color based on color theory and spirituality combined. Inspired by world-renowned artists, contemporary practicing artists, and our own exhibiting artists, we will explore different media, techniques, and subjects you may find in a practicing artist’s studio. This full day workshop held from 10:00a.m. to 3:00p.m. is meant to get you in the art-making groove and develop new approaches to seeing and creating artwork. Whether you have a lifetime practice or are new to expressing yourself, we exchange ideas and techniques in a supportive and challenging environment. Students of all levels are welcome to stretch their creative muscles and build community with us. *All supplies and light refreshments for each workshop are included in the cost. A break for lunch and relaxed discussion will occur midday. Please bring your own bagged lunch or feel free to visit one of the restaurants close by on our provided list.

All-female Baja California Authors Talk and Concert with Mixe singer María Reyna Join us for an incredible event. Enjoy The festival de octubre concert featuring María Reyna, a classical trained soprano from the Mixe region of Oaxaca, México as she shares her culture through the sounds of her language. Reyna sings popular songs and well known classical music translated into Mixe. Join us in experiencing Reyna’s beautiful music during a high level performance where the Mixe language makes this event a most unique experience. The event begins at 2:00 p.m. with presentations by female, Baja California born, authors, Mónica Elizabeth González Rameño and Priscila Rosas Martínez, both recipients of the Arts & Culture Award from the Secretary of Culture in Baja California for their short story “Inevitable” and the novel “Una Peluca Rubia”. They will discuss their works. The presentation will be followed by María Reyna’s concert.
