About Lori Bell | Brooklyn native Lori Bell is a flutist and composer of admirable depth and broad musical sympathies. A resident of San Diego, she has contributed to the development of higher standards of performance while earning acclaim from both peers and critics for her artistry on stage and in recordings. Bell plays with confidence and taste, with a proclivity toward the more subtle means of emotional expression. Her playing inherently has a many-layered depth that reveals a more meaningful art. She renders ballads with exceptional sensitivity while bringing wonderful nuances to swing and be-bop, which she plays with power, agility and a natural élan. Her phrasing, evocative of birds, shows the strong influence of Eric Dolphy, yet is rendered with such purity of tone and range of timbre that it is clearly of a different ornithology. About Eric Evans | The Eric Evans Project is a collaboration of talented musicians that produce original pop/smooth jazz music. This collaboration features Eric Evans who is a multi-woodwind instrumentalist. He plays flute, alto flute, EWI, (a unique sounding electronic woodwind instrument that can play many sounds) and alto sax. Eric has had the privilege of being a featured performer Concert Venues, Jazz Festivals and as a music director for numerous churches. He has produced Three previous CD's including his third “Waves of Grace” with Singer/Songwriter David Eugene Ivey. The Invention of Modern Music Madrigals of Claudio Monteverdi, Sigismondo D’India Bach Collegium San Diego (BCSD), one of the country’s leading ensembles, is performing enchanting early music that has been dubbed as the invention of modern music. Claudio Monteverdi’s music broke the rules of Renaissance polyphony and created the foundations of modern music. Like Shakespeare, Monteverdi’s genius lay in his ability to communicate the full compass of human emotions, especially the most mysterious, tragic, and magical of them all–love. BCSD is performing these pieces in collaboration with GRAMMY award-winning lutenist and conductor Stephen Stubbs. The Year of the Dragon will be celebrated with the 19th annual San Diego Tết Festival in Mira Mesa from Friday, Feb. 16 to Saturday, Feb. 18 — attracting more than 30,000 attendees as the largest Lunar New Year celebration in San Diego County. The Year of the Dragon is typically considered an auspicious year, but for Vietnamese people, it’s even more special. The Vietnamese people are the product of the marriage of Lạc Long Quân (The Dragon Lord of Lạc) and Âu Cơ, a mountain snow goddess. Vietnamese often considered themselves to be descendants of dragons and gods (con rồng cháu tiên), according to Vietnamese myths. “It’s important that we connect our youth to their culture,” said Dennis Duong, president of the Vietnamese American Youth Alliance, which organizes the festival. “This is, at the core, what the festival is about — connecting with our roots and preserving the culture.” The three-day festival features lion dances, a Cultural Village, the Miss Vietnam Pageant, and Vietnamese food, music and vendors. Following the Heavenly Stems (Thiên Can) counting system, this year’s stem is Giáp in combination with Green, Yang, Wood, and East, which means this year is the Eastern Green Wood Dragon. Festival hours are 5 p.m. – 10 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.
