The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library and Murals of La Jolla present Michael Mercil as he gives attendees an inside look on his career, process, recent projects, and 2023 mural ART IS GOOD FOR YOU, commissioned by Murals of La Jolla. The Ohio-based artist explores the realms of “the near, the low, the common” and incorporates an expansive number of mediums (drawing, painting, needlepoint, sculpture, landscape architecture, film, performance, teaching, and farming) in his art. Painted directly on-site, with a complementary color palette that pops, the text becomes a lively imperative to embrace art as a crucial and ubiquitous aspect of daily life. Mercil received a BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art & Design and an MFA from the University of Chicago. His work has been featured in many prominent institutions, including The Fabric Workshop and Museum, Philadelphia; the DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln, Massachusetts; The Living Culture Initiative in collaboration with Ann Hamilton at OSU; The Beanfield, The Virtual Pasture, and Site set-aside projects at Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus; and the Art Market™, an ongoing, Columbus-based studio project. Miracle Babies, a nonprofit organization whose mission is dedicated to helping perinatal mothers and their families during their time of need by providing transportation, mental health assistance and supportive services, will be hosting its next diaper distribution on Saturday, March 9, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., at the Jack in the Box Corporate Office in Kearney Mesa (9357 Spectrum Center Blvd., San Diego, 92123). Registered guests will be able to attend the free diaper distribution from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and then it will open to the public from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Over 350 local families are anticipated to attend. Registration is open through Friday March 8 at 12 p.m. or until supplies last. Since the creation of their diaper distributions in 2020, Miracle Babies has supplied over 1.5 million diapers to over 15,000 families in need. To ease the burden of financial stress, diaper drives are for all families, not just families with babies in the NICU. The American Medical Response (AMR) will also provide free car seat safety inspections on a limited basis. Families in need of products should register online at the Miracles Babies website to ensure availability of diaper sizes. Diaper donations and volunteers are welcome and accepted at all distributions. And in that minimum dimensional space, events happen, which, due to their relatively small impact, are not noticed; with my painted images I try to make them seen and felt. The duality in my painting is always present, the eternal combination of good and bad in each and every one, the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde within ourselves. We are neither saints nor devils we are a combination of both and this condition makes us humans, imperfect and yet beautiful and incredible. The main goal of my tragicomic paintings is to reach people’s consciousness’s by provoking a critical thinking process, searching for their reactions as a total being- neither pure sensibility, nor pure reason.
