Kathy is the pianist/vocalist for Stone Soup Jazz and assistant musical director/accompanist at San Carlos United Methodist Church. As a professional pianist and vocalist Kathy has performed all over the US and in Europe, from solo piano work to jazz clubs to pit orchestras, recording for radio and TV in Boston and LA. She has toured South America and was the keyboardist on 3 albums with Venezuelan artist Frank Quintero and Pablo Manevello. In 2014 she received a 1st place award in the MTAC State Composition Contest for her piece "Little Oscar Prelude" (dedicated to Oscar Peterson) and 2nd place for a solo piano piece, "Paint the Stars", an advanced work. She also served as pianist in a steller trio with Jeff Blanco and Richard Sellers backing up vocalist Stacey Roberts on his January 2015 CD release of "When Sunny Gets Blue" (available on CDbaby and iTunes). She has had the honor of accompanying San Diego jazz legend Charles McPherson, and other local notable musicians such as Leonard Patton, Gary Rich and David Borgo. She has served as pianist for the Legacy Big Band, Downbeat, and Marty Conley Big Band, accompanist for Off Broadway Live and loves being a part of the numerous jazz jam sessions/events and clubs in the thriving San Diego jazz scene. Choose from an upcoming workshop date: Saturday, Feb. 25 or Saturday, May 6 from 1 – 4 p.m. Have you wanted to dive into the mindful, rhythmic, magic of weaving? In this rigid heddle loom workshop, students will learn to weave their own unique handwoven fabric in both plain weave (a classic, simple pattern) and clasped weft (where two wefts interconnect, creating unique patterns). Each student will learn the basics of how the loom works, a variety of simple weaving techniques, plain weave, clasped weft weaving, and finally, hemstitching for a finished piece. Students will weave a length of handwoven fabric of their choosing using the techniques in-class. Looms will be pre-warped in this class and students will weave together on Ashford Looms with 100% cotton fiber for a fiber-friendly afternoon. San Diego New Music and the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library present the 2024 soundON Festival, exploring cutting-edge contemporary music from around the world. This year we celebrate the music of San Diego composer and longtime friend of SDNM and NOISE Adam Greene, and we feature a new work by Mark Menzies commissioned by the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library. This year we also return to an old soundON tradition of highlighting the solo virtuosity of the members of NOISE, with challenging and adventurous works from many eras played by each of the seven musicians.
