Artist Brian Van de Wetering will present Under Glass – An exhibition of experimental lumen prints, on display as part of the City of Encinitas Visual Art program at the Encinitas Community Center from 28 July, 2023 to 18 October, 2023. A reception and artist lecture will be held at the Community Center on 9 September, 2023 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The artist lecture will start at 6:30 p.m. Under Glass is the culmination of five years of experimentation with the photographic process known as lumen printing. A lumen print is a type of contact print or photogram made by exposing photographic paper to light without the use of a camera. Mr. Van de Wetering creates his images by painstakingly arranging various botanical objects – flowers, leaves, seeds, and vegetables – on photographic paper and exposing them to direct sunlight. Pressed tightly between pieces of glass, the ultraviolet light, heat, moisture, and unique chemistry of the botanicals and photographic paper combine to create an image. He then scans these images at high resolution and adjust settings in Photoshop and Lightroom to enhance and reveal subtle colors. Although small prints of these works have been included in juried group exhibitions in the past, Mr. Van de Wetering became convinced that the only way to show the complexity and singular beauty of these works would be to make large-scale prints. In collaboration with local artist and master printer John R. Mireles, Mr. Van de Wetering has created 18 large-scale works for this exhibition ranging in size from 20” x 25” to 80” x 36”. Vanguard Culture presents the ENVZN23: Urban Art Takeover, a visual and performing arts festival that will transform numerous warehouses, industrial spaces, and other urban areas of the Commercial Street corridor in Logan Heights. Two full city blocks will be activated with multi-sensory art interventions by creatives from both sides of the U.S./Mexico border on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2023, from 5 p.m. - 10 p.m. Visitors will experience live dance, puppetry, and theatre performances on warehouse loading docks, a fashion show by Fashion Week San Diego in an industrial storage lot, art installations with curated soundscapes by Tijuana-based multimedia artist MALU, a short film festival inside a crossfit gym, delicious food and drink by local vendors, dance performances along the trolley line and much more. ENVZN23 will respond to the urban landscape by integrating curated sound and theatrical lighting design throughout. ENVZN23 is designed as a recurring event and will return during the year-long celebrations of World Design Capital San Diego Tijuana 2024 for an audience of thousands of design professionals, art patrons, and other culture-seekers from the San Diego Tijuana region and around the world. Guest curator Kathryn Kanjo, Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego presents: Becky Guttin: Drawings on Paper Artist's Reception: Saturday, June 17, 2023 4 - 7 p.m. Drawings on Paper celebrates the long, extensive artistic journey of internationally renowned artist, Becky Guttin. Well-versed in a multitude of media, this exhibit takes a look at some of her earlier works on paper, providing insight to some of the ideas being explored throughout her career. Guttin’s work examines the relationship between the natural world and the materials she utilizes. Earthy tones blend together to create swaying palm trees arching over thick pastel marks of bright, cycling gusts of wind. Later works would indicate a change in direction, with a near-monochromatic scheme of tall plant stalks and towering buildings being interrupted by splashes of yellow, undertones of blue, or outlines of red. Her most recent work on display shows a balanced harmony between the amorphous organic shapes from the past and the simple palette composed of the primary colors from her more recent explorations. An examination into the visual imagery of Guttin’s art shows themes consistent with nature and organic objects and how they relate back to her personal experiences. Her expressive linework and intuitive usage of color are indicative to a distinct style curated over a lifetime of creativity and passion.
