Sophie's Gallery and Bread & Cie present Skate of Mind - State of Mind, a collection of hand-painted skateboards by artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Artists explored themes of independence while creating personal stories of inspiration places they have visited or wish to visit. Along their journey artists learned new techniques including perspective, composition, texture, color, using different paint mediums and tools. and working collaboratively together. From the gallery: Wendell Kling transforms the Athenaeum's gallery and windows with light, color, and cut paper silhouetted imagery to create a peaceful, contemplative retreat. Taking inspiration from temples of various belief systems, A Coruscating Sanctuary provides a platform for the activities that take place within. Kineto-luminescent furnishings and lights orient participants to the central “altar” and matching lectern. Here, the sanctuary invites visitors to participate in quiet reflection, readings, and occasional activations in the exchange of philosophies through poetry, sound, movement, and performance. Wendell M. Kling is a Southern California based interdisciplinary artist and educator. Kling's work is grounded in contemporary interdisciplinary practice that often incorporates sculptural objects with two-dimensional media, installation, performance, and film. The artist received a BA and MFA in studio art from UCSD in 1989 and 2000 respectively and has exhibited locally and nationally at the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, Ship in the Woods, Bread & Salt, Art Basel Miami (2005), Thrust Projects in New York, and MAK Center for Art and Architecture in Los Angeles. Kling is currently professor of sculpture and new genres at San Diego Mesa College. Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Warner Brothers Classic Films with Beth Accomando Thursdays, Aug. 10, 17, 24 & 31, 2023 In August, film critic and scholar Beth Accomando will return to host Flicks on the Bricks. This year we’re celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Warner Brothers studio, and Beth has a stellar lineup of films to showcase the studio’s long history of American filmmaking. The Athenaeum's outdoor movie series, Flicks on the Bricks makes it possible for you to enjoy classic movies that you love while enjoying the beautiful summer night on the patio of the Athenaeum. Guest curator Kathryn Kanjo, Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego presents: Becky Guttin: Drawings on Paper Artist's Reception: Saturday, June 17, 2023 4 - 7 p.m. Drawings on Paper celebrates the long, extensive artistic journey of internationally renowned artist, Becky Guttin. Well-versed in a multitude of media, this exhibit takes a look at some of her earlier works on paper, providing insight to some of the ideas being explored throughout her career. Guttin’s work examines the relationship between the natural world and the materials she utilizes. Earthy tones blend together to create swaying palm trees arching over thick pastel marks of bright, cycling gusts of wind. Later works would indicate a change in direction, with a near-monochromatic scheme of tall plant stalks and towering buildings being interrupted by splashes of yellow, undertones of blue, or outlines of red. Her most recent work on display shows a balanced harmony between the amorphous organic shapes from the past and the simple palette composed of the primary colors from her more recent explorations. An examination into the visual imagery of Guttin’s art shows themes consistent with nature and organic objects and how they relate back to her personal experiences. Her expressive linework and intuitive usage of color are indicative to a distinct style curated over a lifetime of creativity and passion. From the gallery: Quint Gallery presents Wire and Beads, an exhibition comprised of recent suspended sculptures by Anne Mudge. There will be a reception with the artist on Saturday, April 22 from 6-8 PM. Central to Anne’s body of work is the weightless sculptural form, often organized from a central tension (sometimes several), sensitive to the inherent properties of her materials. Read more here.
