At 8 a.m. On Sept. 17, 2023 we will be Running and Walking a 4.5 mile course through our beautiful community of Ocean Beach! Immediately following the run/walk we will host a Mental Health Fair in the parking lot of Newport ave and Abbott street! Our festival consists of performances, Motivational Speakers, Mental Health Resource Booths, Art, An Interactive Flower Wall for Photos, An Obstacle Course on the beach, CPR First Aid Training, Massage Booths, Great Food and Much Much More! The You Are Not Alone campaign aims to become a platform that supports those traumatized by the deaths of loved ones and also those who are currently suffering from anxieties, depression or self harming thoughts! We want you to know that you MATTER and that You Are Not Alone! We are all in this TOGETHER! Our intentions are to unite Ocean Beach and the surrounding areas, in this campaign highlighting Mental Heath and Suicide Prevention. Our route starts on Newport and Bacon. Going East on Newport we will be closing all streets leading up to Sunset Cliffs Blvd! We will make a right on Sunset and run/walk all the way to the end of Sunset cliffs! We look forward to a great run/walk with all of you as our route will be filled with love, light, art, music and of course an amazing view of the Pacific ocean! At the end of Sunset cliffs we will do a roundabout and head back to Newport where we will have our Mental Health Celebration! This is a 4 and half mile walk with a few hills leading up to Sunset cliffs. Not to worry, as we will have tons of hydration, carbs, music and entertainment throughout the entire course! Join host Chris Shurland for a fast-paced, fun night of improvised comedy. The one-of-a-kind show performed by improvisers from northern and southern California will be made up on the spot based completely on audience suggestions. Chris Shurland, the founder of Santa Barbara's Irreverent Improv, is a Chicago-trained improv teacher and performer currently based in Southern California. Before being a part of several house and independent teams in Chicago, Chris completed the training programs at Second City, iO (formerly ImprovOlympic), and Annoyance Theater and was lucky enough to be trained by some of the nation’s best improv teachers. Yu & Me Books was a fairly new business when a fire caused substantial damage to the shop. Now, owner Lucy Yu is working to repair not just the physical bookstore but the community around it as well.

From the museum: "Lozenge–Variant 1" will be on display in the intimate Gerald and Inez Grant Parker Community Gallery, allowing visitors to focus on this singular artwork without their attention being drawn by any adjacent works. The gradually alternating colors will produce a meditative and deliberate experience in the darkened gallery, with seating available for visitors to take their time in the space. About the artist: American artist Phillip K. Smith III (b. Calif., 1972) uses light as a medium to create optically shifting sculptures and site-specific installations. His minimal but imposing interventions into vast outdoor landscapes and more discretely scaled sculptures are nuanced perceptual encounters in response to the unique conditions of site and context. Expansive and living, Smith’s boundary dissolving sculptures use mirrors and LED technology to alter the interplay of light, color, and surface in an expanded field, proposing shifts in experiential pace to modify the viewer's physical encounter. Trained as an artist and an architect at Rhode Island School of Design, Smith incorporates the site-specificity of architecture, with its reliance on scale, and its capacity to physically impact the human interaction it supports, to create immersive viewing experiences. The Lightworks originated when Smith created Aperture during his artist residency in 2010 at the Palm Springs Art Museum. Learn more here. For over 1,000 years, Japan has produced some of the world’s finest paper, using strong natural fibers and exceptional production techniques passed down through the generations. Japanese handmade paper, known as washi (和紙) is still made in some areas of Japan and used in painting, calligraphy, origami, and other traditional art forms. Recently, contemporary Japanese artists have been turning to this supple yet sturdy material, using it as a medium for creating highly textured two-dimensional works, complex sculptures, and dramatic installations. Employing techniques ranging from layering, weaving, and dying, to twisting, folding, and cutting, these artists demonstrate the endless contemporary applications of this ancient material. This exhibition, "Washi Transformed," focuses on washi as a medium for contemporary art in Japan and spotlights the works of nine very different contemporary Japanese artists who are exploring the artistic potential of this traditional material. The artists – Hina Aoyama, Eriko Horiki, Kyoko Ibe, Yoshio Ikezaki, Kakuko Ishii, Yuko Kimura, Yuko Nishimura, Takaaki Tanaka, Ayomi Yoshida – all push the boundaries of Japanese washi art in terms of texture, dimension, and scale, creating works that challenge our assumptions about the nature of the material. Their abstract paper sculptures, lyrical folding screens, dramatic installations, and highly textured wall pieces all demonstrate the resilience and versatility of washi as a medium in the realm of international contemporary art. "Washi Transformed: New Expressions in Japanese Paper" was organized by Meher McArthur and is toured by International Arts & Artists, Washington, DC.
