The San Diego Animal Sanctuary & Farm, a 20-acre farm in Alpine, is hosting its 11th annual fundraising gala at the Bahia Resort Hotel on Saturday, December 2nd at 5:30 p.m. with “Disco Wonderland” as this year’s theme. Beginning at 5:30 p.m., the event will kick off with a cocktail reception, followed by a three-course gourmet dinner and dancing. Guests will also be able to participate in live and silent auctions. All money raised throughout the evening will support the Foundation’s mission, expanding its resources and farming operations. The evening will also provide a much-needed influx in cash flow and allow the farm to repair shelters and fences while enabling veterinary care as needed. From the moment Mercedes Moore takes the stage you can’t look away. She welcomes you to the show, thanks you for coming, and the band rips into its opening chords. As dancers rush to the floor, the smile on Mercedes’ face grows more radiant; you’re in her world and nothing else matters. You might think she was destined to do this, but you’d be wrong. Moore grew up doubting her skills, "I didn’t think that I could sing." She says. “I didn’t think it was possible.” That was then, this is now. Yet, the most remarkable aspect of this story, the woman has only been singing professionally for a little more than eight years. Eight years. Let there be no doubt, Mercedes Moore is making the most of her time. As a three-time San Diego Music Award nominee, Moore performs regularly with some of Southern California’s premier musicians. The list is endless–Taryn Donath, John Simons, Mark Campbell, Marc Ramos, Tracy Wiebeck, Kurt Kalker, Matt Taylor, Steve Wilcox, Scot Smart, Missy Andersen, Sharifah Muhammad, and Laura Chavez–to name but a few. When asked, Moore is straightforward about the multitude of players. “It just makes you a better singer.” She smiles. “And different people have different strengths. Plus, I want to learn, so I can be better.” It appears to be working. A powerfully gifted musician and a scholar of Black American music, Jake Blount speaks ardently about the African roots of the banjo and the subtle, yet profound ways African Americans have shaped and defined the amorphous categories of roots music and Americana. His 2020 album Spider Tales (named one of the year’s best albums by NPR and the New Yorker, earned a perfect 5-star review from the Guardian) highlighted the Black and Indigenous histories of popular American folk tunes, as well as revived songs unjustly forgotten in the whitewashing of the canon. Blount’s new album, The New Faith, is a towering achievement of dystopian Afrofuturism and his first album for Smithsonian Folkways (released September 23, 2022). The New Faith is spiritual music, filled with hope for salvation and righteous anger in equal measure. The album manifests our worst fears on the shores of an island in Maine, where Blount enacts an imagined religious ceremony performed by Black refugees after the collapse of global civilization due to catastrophic climate change. Blount’s music is rooted in care and confrontation. On stage, each song he and his band play is chosen for a reason—because it highlights important elements about the stories we tell ourselves of our shared history and our endlessly complicated present moment. Iván Naranjo a fundamental asymmetry The Center for Experimentation and Production of Contemporary Music (Cepromusic), the leading new music ensemble in Mexico, will make binational musical history this month by offering two concerts at the prestigious Conrad Prebys Concert Hall at the University of California San Diego (UCSD). The performances, scheduled for January 30 and 31 at 7 p.m., will mark a milestone for Cepromusic, as they kick off their first international tour since the COVID 19 pandemic. Both concerts will be free and open to the public. Under the baton of their visionary artistic director José Luis Castillo, Cepromusic is proud to present "Translínea. Binational Tour 2024" – a groundbreaking series of concerts that not only celebrates the reemergence of international music making but also marks the ensemble's debut at the renowned UC San Diego venue and their first visit to the US West Coast ever. The tour also includes concerts in the neighboring Mexican cities of Tijuana and Ensenada, yet another first for the Mexico City-based ensemble. The concerts will feature a wide array of adventurous and diverse repertoire, aiming to build a musical bridge between contemporary Mexican composition and global new music.
