One of the most prestigious juried shows in San Diego, the Athenaeum’s 31st Annual Juried Exhibition will be on view this summer in the Clayes Gallery. Nearly 300 artists entered 900 works for consideration. Juror Isabel Casso, Assistant Curator, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, selected the final 25 artists and 35 works to exhibit. The exhibition will continue in the Rotunda Gallery. Prizewinners, including the recipient of the Leslie Von Kolb Memorial Award, will be announced at the opening reception on Friday, July 14, which will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.  Artists in the exhibition are Elizabeth Burger, Dillon Chapman, Morgan DeLuna, Raul Espinoza, Angela Figueroa, Kaori Fukuyama, Sarah Garcia, Neville Greene, Sam Grenier, Marina Grize, Becky Guttin, Andres Hernandez, Terri Hughes, Mayce Keeler, Gianna LaPonte, Monica Loss, Maria Mathioudakis, Leslie Nemour, Oriana Poindexter, Vincent Robles, Amir Saadiq, Sean Sarmiento, Michael Upton, Leslye Villaseñor, and Lizzie Zelter.  Juror: Isabel Casso, Assistant Curator, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego Isabel Casso is the Assistant Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. Casso’s recent projects include a special exhibition with Carmen Argote and a retrospective of Celia Álvarez Muñoz. Previously, she was the Marjorie Susman Curatorial Fellow at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, where she organized Grain of a Hand: Drawings with Graphite and a solo exhibition of Chilean artist Alfredo Jaar. She has held positions at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Casso earned an MA in art history from Williams College and a BA in art history and economics from Loyola Marymount University. The exhibition can be viewed in the Joseph Clayes III Gallery at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library (1008 Wall Street, La Jolla, CA 92037) during open hours, Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Appointments are not required. The most anticipated installment of San Diego Filipino Cinema’s year-long programming, the San Diego Filipino Film Festival (SDFFF) is back on its third year this fall from October 3-8, 2023. Held during Filipino American History Month in October, SDFFF is SDFC's centerpiece event that aims to raise awareness for Filipino cinema as an important art form and a powerful tool for representation, education, and entertainment. SDFFF will bring San Diego communities together to celebrate diversity, culture, and heritage through cinema with a diverse mix of narrative features, documentaries, and short films. Larger Than Life sheds light on films that showcase stories that address current world issues from different perspectives of all walks of life.

"Bayanihan: Dance-Theatre Spectacular" is a world-premiere dance-theatre performance featuring an all Filipinx-American cast and creative team. From the organizers: On August 19 and 20, 2023, Maraya Performing Arts presents Bayanihan, at our studio that is for and by multi-generational Filipino-Americans of South Bay. Bayanihan will explore the triumphs and resilience of this immigrant community through a variety of performing arts mediums including hip hop, contemporary dance, live music, spoken word poetry and DJing by Dr. DJ Kuttin Kandi founder and executive director of the Asian Solidarity Collective. Director/Choreographer Anjanette Maraya-Ramey is a first generation Filipina-American, and South Bay native whose father immigrated to the United States in 1973 and joined the US Navy. Similar stories are shared by many South Bay resident Filipinos who fled poverty and dictatorship of their homeland to seek refuge in a foreign country. Bayanihan will serve as an outlet to share the multi-generational stories of the American Dream, assimilation to a new home, and the resilience and selflessness of the Filipino people of South Bay in search of belonging. Bayanihan choreographers include: Sean Asuncion, Xavier Hicks, and Odessa Uno. Hailing from Los Angeles, Filipinx R&B recording artist and Chula Vista native, Roann Mesina will be a featured singer in the show. Weaving narrative, spoken word poetry and spinning live beats is South Bay resident, Dr. Kandi. Saturday, Aug. 19 and Sunday Aug. 20 Doors: 1:30 p.m. Show: 2-3 p.m. After Party (LAST DAY ONLY!) – 3-4:45 p.m. In solidarity and appreciation for the Filipino culture, audience members are encouraged to sport Barong Tagalog and Filipiniana attire! The post show reception includes a fiesta with lite appetizers, Karaoke and dance party.
