Kintsugi | Embracing Imperfection Saturday, March 11 from 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. In this workshop, students will learn about the origins of Kintsugi, the Japanese ‘art of golden repair,’ and its meaning as it relates to one’s own life. Instructor Luis Santiago explains, “In these uncertain and crazy times, I believe people can find some solace and comfort in realizing that their so called “scars” and imperfections are things that do not need to be hidden or ashamed of.” While the traditional craft of Kintsugi can take multiple months to complete, mastery in application, and involves toxic lacquer, the techniques used in this workshop to repair two ceramic pieces and embellish these pieces in two distinct Kintsugi-inspired ways brings it to a much wider audience and allows for completion in one workshop. All materials are included. Students will learn two distinct ways of highlighting the breaks of their provided ceramic pieces and will take home a unique piece. Ages 17+ are welcome. Stay Social! Saturday, March 11 from 1 – 3:30 p.m. Adorn your walls, windows, and even fences with cheerful, fused glass pocket vases created by your own hands. With spring around the corner, these water-tight vases are wonderful for flower cuttings, dried flowers, herbs, incense sticks, or just left plain. You will be shown how to use thick fiber paper to create the form for the “pocket” of your vase and how to embed the chain hooks within your design. You will be guided as needed in glass cutting techniques and design considerations. Each student will have approximately 8” x 8” of space in the kiln so 1-2 vases can be made. Bring someone in your family or a friend! Beginners welcome! There is a cash-only $10 special materials fee (for hooks, chain, and fiber paper) due on day of workshop. Family Clay | Glazing Bowls March 4 from 2 – 4 p.m. Looking for something fun and creative to try with mom, your besties, or your family? Curious about the glazing process? Join artist Lydia Kardos as she leads this outdoor workshop decorating and glazing pottery bowls. She’ll show you how to get lovely colors and teach creative techniques for customizing your bowl. The bowls we prepare for you to glaze are made from high quality, mid-fire clay, which is food-safe and will last for years and years. Fun for all ages and skill levels. Projects will be ready for pick up 1 – 2 weeks after the class. All ages welcome! "James Hubbell: Architecture of Jubilation" will be showing concurrently at the locations below: • Architecture of Jubilation - Central Library • A Mountain Home & Studios - Scripps Miramar Ranch Library • Pacific Rim Project - Mission Valley Library • Lado a Lado - Otay Mesa-Nestor Library In southern California, between the influences of San Diego, Tijuana and the Pacific; among mountains, manzanita, boulders and oaks, lives a man who builds a world he wants to live in - where the aesthetic is a reflection of nature - and philosophy and art are a way of life. Artist James Hubbell has a 70-plus-year career as a contemporary master who expresses himself through nature-inspired art, architecture and functional objects and spaces. Using stone and glass, paint and pen, wood and steel, his works are natural and unconfined. His human and nature-centric design places art in walls, roofs, floors, and furnishings, not separate from, but as extensions of life. In Hubbell’s world, the everyday is elevated to art, and art is for every day. Hubbell recognizes that it is our cities, buildings, structures - our treatment of our environment -that are perhaps our truest expressions of our views and values, our understanding of the ordering of the universe in which we live. Without great fanfare or financial reward, James Hubbell, the non-architect builder, personally led the design and construction of multiple architectural and fine art projects that accomplished meaningful social and educational transformation in Tijuana and San Diego. Architectural designer, sculptor, painter, stained-glass artist, community activist - James Hubbell is one of San Diego’s most prolific artists. His Architecture of Jubilation - is an invitation for all of us to create the world we want to live in. The Opening Reception will feature musician Pablo Dodero! Pablo is a producer, DJ, and writer originally from Tijuana, México. He is currently working on his PhD in Music at UCSD researching Mexico's electronic music history. He has been involved in the DIY music scene in Tijuana, San Diego, and Los Angeles for over two decades and currently performs experimental electronic music under the names Adiós Mundo Cruel and Les Temps Barbares. This exhibition was made possible by a collaboration between the San Diego Public Library, the San Diego Commission for Arts & Culture, the Library Foundation SD and the Ilan-Lael Foundation. This Project is an official community initiative of the World Design Capital San Diego/ Tijuana 2024. Featured programming will be occurring throughout the exhibition run. The Barn Redefined is excited to host another Christmas-themed festival ‘The 12 Days of Christmas’ on November 2-5, 9-12 & 16-19. This event is a great place for holiday decorating ideas with one of the most anticipated features being the themed Christmas trees and this year, they have 20! Each year Santa makes an appearance and, this year, they will be collecting new toys for Anvil of Hope, a non-profit focused on helping low-income families, those facing homelessness and temporary hardship. The three weekends of events start Thursday, Nov. 2, and run through Sunday, Nov. 19. at 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sundays. The spectacular family holiday concert Carols by Candlelight will take place on Friday and Saturday, December 8 & 9 at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido. Now in its 34th year, proceeds from these two concerts will go to Rady Children’s Hospital. The two nights of Christmas-inspired concerts will feature country music stars singing their hits and favorite holiday songs. This year’s headliner is multi-platinum recording artist Deana Carter, making her first Carols by Candlelight headline appearance. Veteran performers Anna Vaus, and Steve Vaus will also be headlining alongside Charlie Worsham and Back to the Garden. Following the on-stage performances, to close the evening, the audience and stars meet in the courtyard and sing “Silent Night” by candlelight. In addition to the live entertainment, the benefit also features a live auction offering autographed guitars and other items, as well as silent auction items and raffle prizes, donated by sponsoring organizations.
