The most anticipated installment of San Diego Filipino Cinema’s year-long programming, the San Diego Filipino Film Festival (SDFFF) is back on its third year this fall from October 3-8, 2023. Held during Filipino American History Month in October, SDFFF is SDFC's centerpiece event that aims to raise awareness for Filipino cinema as an important art form and a powerful tool for representation, education, and entertainment. SDFFF will bring San Diego communities together to celebrate diversity, culture, and heritage through cinema with a diverse mix of narrative features, documentaries, and short films. About the Film | Inspired by the pre-colonial Filipino value kapwa, or “shared identity”, "Searching for Kapwa" follows the filmmakers quest to understand his ancestral roots, heal from a sense of cultural alienation, and find his place in the arc of history. As a child of immigrants and a queer brown person living in polarized America, Larry’s journey unpacks the complicated history of the Philippines, and its lasting impact on the Filipino diaspora. Ultimately, the film is a densely layered exploration of what it is to be American, and the legacy of the generations we all carry within us.

The City of Encinitas will present work by artist Juan Flores. This is Mr. Flores’ first post-pandemic exhibition. Mr. Flores’ works show an optimistic conceptual approaches that, at times, reflect a seascape, a feeling, a memory, or a dream. Many of his paintings depict Encinitas and North San Diego beaches images. The artist uses intense colors to make vanishing memories vivid images and recapture a fading dream or a distant event. This imagery recreates the past in a light somewhere between the real and the surreal. At other times the artist paints the ocean as seen by the surfer floating on the water, waiting for the next wave. The image recreates the feeling of distance from the shore and the dance between sky and sea. Other times the sea is shown in a moody light during the early morning or in the twilight before complete nightfall. Many of his paintings include his dog Louie….find Louie!

Annabelle Camp is the Kress Conservation Fellow at Balboa Art Conservation Center and for this Art Break, she will introduce textile conservation as a profession. In her talk, Annabelle will highlight case studies from her work and detailed guidance on how individuals can care for the textiles in their homes to ensure they are preserved for future generations. The talk will be informative for all, especially textile enthusiasts, makers, and collectors! More About Annabelle Camp Annabelle Camp is a textile and organic objects conservator. She has an MS from the Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation and bachelor’s degrees in Anthropology and Art Conservation from the University of Delaware. She has trained in some of the world’s leading textile conservation labs, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Abegg-Stiftung, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Annabelle strives to make community collaboration an integral part of her conservation practice. She has led numerous collaborative programs and repatriation projects and published widely on the value of community engagement in cultural heritage preservation.
