This class is taught by women to empower women & non-gender conforming individuals in the wood shop. We cover the properties of wood, machine safety, and techniques on the chop saw, including miters, angled cuts, and how to properly cut joinery for them. Other machines will be introduced as well such as the router, biscuit jointer, and drill press. We’ll show you how to properly sand, and finish your piece with an easy, non-toxic, traditional finish. Each attendee will make a wall-hung shelf to take home. No experience necessary. Ages 18+ welcome!

TERI Campus of Life, whose mission is to change the way the world sees, helps, and empowers individuals with special needs, is thrilled to announce that AMERICAN IDOL contender and indie rock sensation, Adin Boyer, along with special guests Jungle Poppins, will perform live at their Rock the Spectrum Benefit Concert. This event will take place on Dec. 29, 2023 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at TERI’s San Marcos Campus of Life (Cornfeather Suite/Mountain View Deck, 555 Deer Springs Rd, San Marcos, CA 92069). All proceeds will benefit TERI Campus of Life programs and services for children, adults, and seniors with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Guests will experience a magical evening of music under the stars as they bid farewell to 2023, celebrating with the talented pianist and San Diego's own Jungle Poppins. Both gifted artists credit autism as their catalyst to excellence and are geared up to “Rock the Spectrum.” Adin, an exceptional musician and advocate for Autism and Anti-Bullying, will open hearts with soulful melodies while Jungle Poppins vows to "let music upstage autism." In 2023, Adin wowed audiences on American Idol, advancing to Hollywood and earning accolades from industry icons Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and mentor Phillip Phillips. TERI is honored to host Adin in his first San Diego show prior to launching his national tour. Tickets to the concert start at $25 for general admission and $50 for VIP. In this workshop, students will expand upon what they learned in Poetry One about the history of poetry written today and the beginning toolbox of poetry techniques. The focus of this workshop is the expansion of poetry techniques through the exploration of contemporary poetry types, poem techniques and the identity of different creative approaches. Upon completion of this workshop, you will have: ⁃ Explored the elements of free verse. ⁃ Defined the difference between the lyric and the narrative poem. ⁃ Considered the composite poem in light of our current society. ⁃ Practiced different poem endings. ⁃ Examined your poetic creative tendencies. ⁃ Read and analyzed two poetry books. Event Schedule: Week 1| Introduction to Poetry Two, review tips for evaluating a book of poetry, poem critique, workshop etiquette. What is free verse? Homework: begin to pick/order your books. Take home writing prompt. Week 2| What is lyric poetry? How does it differ from narrative? Read and critique class workshop. Week 3| The narrative poem and the composite poem. Read and critique class workshop. Week 4| How do poems end? In-class writing prompt. Read and critique class workshop. Week 5| Your chakra—image, diction and rhetoric. Read and critique class workshop Each participant will choose one book of poetry and one poetry craft book and submit, by week 5, a one to two page analysis of the book and its value, or not, to the individual’s poetry writing. Poem prompts will be given each week with the anticipation that the participants will generate new work. Participants are expected to actively participate in the read and critique portions of the workshop. You will be emailed the Zoom link 24 hours before the start of class. Please join us for the US premiere book talk and signing of "Cities of Women" featuring author Kathleen B. Jones in an outdoor garden. Kathleen B. Jones, Professor Emerita, SDSU will discuss her first historical novel. Inspired by a decade of research, her new book explores the joys and pitfalls faced by medieval woman artists and a contemporary academic who becomes obsessed with medieval books. Kathy Jones was the chair of the first women’s studies program in the nation at SDSU and acting dean of the College of Arts and Letters. She lives in Stonington, CT, and this is her seventh book. "Maps & Memories” is inspired by Mingei International Museum’s Washi Transformed exhibit featuring highly textured two-dimensional works, expressive sculptures, and dramatic installations that explore the astonishing potential of Japanese handmade paper, known as washi. This concert features the San Diego Children’s Choir in works by Ilse Weber, as well as “Six Japanese Gardens” for solo percussion by Kaija Saariaho and the Hausmann Quartet performing Kojiro Umezaki’s “(Cycles) What falls must rise” for shakuhachi, string quartet and electronics.
