There will also be a live poetry performance by Lora Mathis and Matty Terrones in Jacobs Hall and a Book Pop-Up Shop in Berglund Lobby. Refreshments will be available for purchase from The Kitchen. "The Snakes Came Back" is Lora Mathis' third collection of poems, published by Metatron Press in Montréal, Quebec. Lora Mathis’s "The Snakes Came Back" invokes mythology, dreams, and the natural world as realms of solace and wells of knowledge in the healing of trauma. In Lora Mathis’s poems, the body is a temporary resting place for the infinite, resilient soul. "The Snakes Came Back" follows a speaker contending with trauma in the slipstream of earthly time. Mathis’s poems are peopled with friends and lovers—both named and anonymous, current and past—and invested in necessary interdependence as a means of healing the self. "The Snakes Came Back" cracks open everyday tasks and familiar landscapes to reveal their haunting depths. Saturated with heat and wind, Mathis’s poems vibrate with the will to face life’s temporality, its impossible contradictions, its beauty and its pain: “There is loss, but there is renewal too.” About the Author| Lora Mathis (she/they) is a poet and artist who grew up between Southern California and Montréal. She is interested in creating immersive worlds through poetry, video, and performance. She has been sharing her art and poetry online for the last twelve years, and has utilized digital tools, such as video, graphic design, and photography, as a part of her practice. In the last two years, her practice has expanded into printmaking and sculpture. They have published two collections of poetry including, "The Women Widowed to Themselves" (2015; republished 2020). The experimental essay "Here I Am In It" was published by Burn All Books in 2022. Mathis performs poetry on their own, and with their sound collaborator and longtime friend, Matty Terrones. With Terrones, they put out the poetry and music album Sediment via Hello America Lit. Mathis is a recent graduate of UC Berkeley and currently lives in Oakland. The most anticipated installment of San Diego Filipino Cinema’s year-long programming, the San Diego Filipino Film Festival (SDFFF) is back on its third year this fall from October 3-8, 2023. More About the Film: Rica (50s), after working abroad comes home to stay with her ageing mother until she finds new work. She is disappointed to discover that all past years of sending money to the Philippines to repair their old home amounted to nothing. It looks the same way as she left it years ago. Her son, Vincent (18), is finishing college and needs to focus on his studies so Rica takes over to be a caregiver to her mom, Choleng (85). Taking care of her stubborn elderly mother is a nightmare. She never thought that it can be so difficult. Choleng complains about everything and treats Rica like a child which she really despised. Afternoons are spent on prayer meetings and evenings on more praying. Rica realizes that her mother’s difficult behavior is caused by her impaired hearing. With the help of their prayer meeting group they pitched in to buy her a hearing aid that she refuses to use. It reaches a point that Rica and Choleng start fighting. Rica blames her mother for her futile sacrifice of working abroad. Rica decides to accept an offer to work abroad again.Choleng requests for her not to leave anymore. Rica thinks otherwise. On the same evening, Choleng prays silently but earnestly in her room. Suddenly she chokes and breaks down, tears running down her eyes. She goes to sleep then into comma. In the end, Rica learns what Choleng has done all the years that she was working abroad. It is just refreshing to see once more this mother and daughter tandem who made history when Gloria and her daughter Nadia Veloso (aka Maria S. The 15th annual FREE La Jolla Art & Wine Festival (LJAWF) returns to the coastal town of La Jolla from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7, and Sunday, Oct. 8, 2023. With a spectacular coastline and picturesque views, La Jolla is the perfect setting for this weekend of creative celebration. Visitors can expect prestigious art, regional and international wines, craft beer and spirits, a high-end silent auction, all-star live entertainment and music, a gourmet food court, over ten pet rescue stations, as well as interactive, family-friendly fun! The La Jolla Art & Wine Festival features more than 160 hand-selected juried artists from across the U.S. and Mexico. Artists from all backgrounds will display exquisite creations in a variety of mediums including painting, sculpture, jewelry design, fine glass, ceramics, woodwork, mixed media, and photography. But this weekend is not just for the art connoisseur—the LJAWF is also where wine enthusiasts, craft beer and spirit lovers unite. Festival visitors who are twenty-one and older can sample delectable wines from Valle De Guadalupe, California, Italy, and France, and taste a wide variety of internationally renowned brews and spirits by several local San Diego craft breweries and distilleries in the Wine & Beer Garden. Located in the center of the festival, it boasts more than 13,000 square feet with ample seating, shade, and room to dance!
