Art and culture continue to bridge the physical boundary between the countries, fostering ongoing connections between creators and patrons in both regions. Paisanos, a project coordinated by the Instituto Municipal de Arte y Cultura de Tijuana, is dedicated to developing a formal discussion surrounding migration and movement, and has brought together a collection of two-dimensional artworks whose narratives are inspired by their creator’s proximity to the border and life between two countries. Sparks Gallery and the Instituto Municipal de Arte y Cultura de Tijuana are pleased to jointly present this collection in “Paisanos México,” opening January 2023 at Sparks Gallery in downtown San Diego (530 Sixth Avenue). Sparks Gallery fosters collaboration through art exhibitions, and is pleased to host its first international exhibition with artists from the Tijuana region. The exhibition consists of 17 pieces made in a variety of mediums by the following artists: Luis Alderete, Carlos Castrejón, Laura Lehman, Pablo Castañeda, Francisco Chávez Corrujedo, Carlos Coronado Ortega, Angela González, Ruth Hernández Ortíz, Virinia Lizardi, Daniel Marquéz, Antonio Oceguera Figueroa, Francisco Postlethwaite, Margarita Torres, Gerardo Diego, Ligia Santillan, Tony Beltran, and Liz Vaillard. From the organizers: Broadway veteran & San Diego native Jeremy McQueen brings his Emmy® award-winning New York City–based ballet collaborative to San Diego for the west coast premiere of two original ballets: WILD and A Mother's Rite. The Black Iris Project's mission is to harness the Black community's inherent creative spirit to encourage and inspire youth of color to pursue art, movement and music as an expressive outlet and a means for collective healing. “Since its inception in 2016, The Black Iris Project has been committed to telling Black narratives through ballet, using art as a mirror to reflect the times and consistently intertwining themes of social justice in everything we do. As someone who has worked to break through many doors in the world of dance, particularly ballet, I feel it is our duty as artists to be a catalyst for those that are unheard, unseen, and undervalued. Naturally San Diego, a nonprofit organization dedicated to stimulating growth and entrepreneurship amongst environmentally and socially-conscious consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies throughout San Diego County, is proud to announce the six finalists of its Third Annual Pitch Slam. On the evening of April 27, each finalist will go head-to-head in a competition-style broadcast of San Diego’s most promising group of natural products. Entrepreneurs will take the stage to pitch their emerging brands to a panel of industry-expert judges and local audience members, ultimately winning a suite of prizes from the local San Diego community to help propel their brand’s industry growth. The winner will also represent Naturally San Diego at Natural Products Expo East in September at the national Pitch Slam competition in Philadelphia. The history of illuminated manuscripts is filled with beauty and intrigue. These hand-written books which were prized throughout Europe had painted embellishments often utilizing precious metals such as gold and silver. The pages of these miniature works of art were made up of animal skins called vellum. Their subject matter was usually Christian scripture, practice, and lore. Illuminated manuscripts were produced in Europe between 1100-1600 and often originated from monasteries or were commissioned by wealthy individuals who wanted them for their personal libraries. Between the 13th and 15th centuries upper class patrons supported the creation of private workshops that flourished primarily in French and Italian cities and their surrounding courts. One only has to look at the masterpiece Les Tres Riches Heures du duc de Berry by the noted Limbourg Brothers to understand how amazing and prized these handmade books were. By 1440, however, their popularity began to diminish with the ability to mass produce books with the advent of the printing press. In this docent-led talk, significant manuscripts will be discussed along with their influence on the art of the late Medieval and early Renaissance.
