Sophie's Gallery & Gift Shop, operated by St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center, will host its 12th Annual Alley Cat Art Walk, a free family-friendly art event in the Historic El Cajon Downtown Arts District, on Friday, September 15, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Local art galleries, art studios, a museum, and other local small businesses invite the public to discover the arts in Downtown El Cajon while enjoying fine art, crafts, live music, and refreshments. There will be several fine art shows during the event, including The Music in Me at Sophie’s Gallery - a collection of hand-painted musical instruments, musical-inspired prints, and mosaic art; Color at Silver Creek Fine Art & Gallery; Beyond Impressionism at The East County Art Association; and a display of contemporary Native American themed art at the Wieghorst Museum. This year, Sophie’s Gallery is excited to feature artwork from artbrutkorea, a collective of South Korean artists on the autism spectrum who are participating in the group show, The Music in Me. Along with the collection of hand-painted instruments, the show also includes unique instrument prints, up-cycled CD weavings, hand-embroidered iron-on patches, kumihimo braided guitar & bag straps, and more. The Historic Downtown El Cajon hosts many events, small businesses, restaurants, galleries, museums, and murals all within walking distance, making for a memorable visit. Alongside many food and drink options, the festival will also feature beer tasting hosted by the El Cajon German American Societies Inc. Sophie’s Gallery & Gift Shop is a program of St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center, which serves more than 400 adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through nationally recognized, innovative programs. Its mission is to educate and empower individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to realize their full potential. Intellectual and developmental disabilities include autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other cognitive disorders.

This class is taught by women to empower women & non-gender conforming individuals in the wood shop. We cover the properties of wood, machine safety, and techniques on the chop saw, including miters, angled cuts, and how to properly cut joinery for them. Other machines will be introduced as well such as the router, biscuit jointer, and drill press. We’ll show you how to properly sand, and finish your piece with an easy, non-toxic, traditional finish. You can't hold a great Bluesman Down! Chicago Blues legend Stoney B. Blues, is back at Old Town Blues Club. If you consider yourself a Blues purist, than this is a show for you. Stoney B (Michael Stone) was born May 29th, 1954 in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up listening to the blues. His father Lil' Howling Wolf, who lived in Memphis, Tennessee, played and performed the blues in Chicago. Stoney B’s passion for the blues really took hold when he began teaching himself the bass guitar at the age of 13. Stoney B started performing at age 15 in his first band called The Rayshons. They performed and competed mostly in talent shows including one he recalls against The Jackson 5 at the Regal Theatre. Since then he has continued to fulfill his heart felt desire of bringing his music to audiences around the US. In 2023, with over 50 years of experience, he has become a highly accomplished guitarist, vocalist, songwriter and recording artist of the Blues. Stoney B not only has lots of talent but that wonderful gift of communication which grabs people’s attention as he brings them into a truly enjoyable, masterful and often humorous experience as he entertains them with the Down Home Blues. He feels and shares at a soulful level the essence of the blues with strong influences from Muddy Waters, BB King and Jimmy Reed.

JAR Senior Club (JSC), the first senior club in San Diego dedicated to bringing together seniors and local community resources at no cost to individuals 64 years old and older, celebrates Healthy Aging Month with the JSC Wellness Event on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2023 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will feature a DJ, senior talent show, games, health education and more. JSC expects to draw over 150 attendees at 2340 East 8th St. National City CA 91950. Admission is free to all senior community members. Founded by local San Diegan Angel Ogapong, JSC aims to provide seniors with a sense of belonging through community, engagement, education and health and wellness. San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan will speak on the Safe Seniors Program against elder abuse at the event. National City Mayor Ron Morrison and Chula Vista Mayor John McCann will also be present to discuss the importance of proactively engaging seniors. “I was the primary caretaker for my grandparents, and as they got older I saw how much their daily lives and overall health were affected by lack of engagement and community,” said JSC Founder Angel Ogapong. “I decided to launch JSC to alleviate the disengagement seniors were experiencing while educating them about free resources that are not only available to them, but created for them.” JSC also helps seniors navigate through Medicare benefits and bridge access to additional resources that they may not know are available to them at no cost. Medicare health insurance representatives will be present to educate seniors about benefiting programs. Community partners American Medical Response and SuiteCare Pharmacy will provide free healthcare screenings for attendees. Supporting nonprofits including Filipino American Chamber of Commerce Greater San Diego and the National Latina Business Women Association San Diego will be at the event. Philippine musical artist Nyoy Volante, also known as “King of Philippine Acoustic Pop,” will perform a special performance for attending guests.
