  • The 101st annual Coronado Flower Show is set to take place, April 15-16, 2023. Organized by the Coronado Floral Association (CFA), this is the largest tented flower show in the U.S. and Coronado’s longest running tradition, which includes an array of events leading up to and throughout the two-day festival. This year’s event theme is Hollywood in Bloom. The main event, The Coronado Flower Show, is divided into five divisions – Horticulture, Design, Special Exhibits, Youth and Botanical Arts. The show has been a spring tradition since 1922 and is one of the largest tented flower show in the U.S. Located at Spreckels Park, this two-day event includes landscape displays, a variety of floral competitions, educational lectures and demonstrations, live bandstand entertainment, food, a beer & wine garden with locally crafted beers, and shopping.   • Bruce Heimbach was in the prime of his professional career as an architect/project manager for a large local construction firm when he unexpectedly suffered a massive stroke. After the stroke, he developed aphasia and was not able to communicate his basic needs and wants. Over time, Heimbach made a remarkable recovery and developed a new outlook on life: “Experience the world more visually and less verbally.” Aphasia is the loss or impairment of language. Faculty members from the Department of Speech-Language Pathology will provide a brief overview of what aphasia is and how it can impact a person. Heimbach will share his experience in recovery as well as his art and how it has guided him and shifted his values and priorities. From Heimbach: “This is a new life. All of my efforts now go toward attending speech therapy and to adapting and learning a ‘new’ language. My old (great) job and hobbies are gone; I now ‘enjoy life visually, not verbally.’ I have to use my camera, my pencils and my brushes to try to make diagrams, examples and communications. I want to encourage and inspire others – patients, students and teachers – to slow down and live simply.”

  • The Hausmann Quartet and Maritime Museum of San Diego are excited to partner to present the eighth season of "Haydn Voyages: Music at the Maritime", a quarterly concert series performed aboard one of the Museum’s historic world-class vessels, the 1898 steam ferryboat Berkeley that operated for 60 years on San Francisco Bay. Four concerts will be performed throughout the year at the Maritime Museum February 26, May 21, September 17 and November 19. All concerts are Sundays at 2:30, and include an intermission for a total length of under two hours. Each creative program will also include informative and entertaining commentary between selections from noted UC Santa Barbara musicologist Derek Katz.
