Join us at Garibaldi to learn the art of cyanotype, a 170 year old photographic printing process that uses sunlight to produce prints in a distinctive dark greenish-blue, and enjoy delicious sustainable seafood dishes all while supporting ocean conservation. Oriana Poindexter will guide guests as they create their own frame worthy cyanotype, or sun print, to take home using native kelp, seaweed and natural materials harvested responsibly from San Diego's ocean and shoreline. During the interactive workshop, guests will enjoy tray-passed bites including Culurgiones Friti with local rock crab, potato, telligio and brown butter emulsion; Local Opah Meatballs served with a spicy ‘nduja tomato sauce, sheep milk yogurt, and mint; and Sogliole Alla Parmigiana made with San Diego sand dabs, mirto fume, pecorino sardo, frisée, sea grass, and parsley. A full bar featuring Garibaldi’s signature cocktails will also be available for purchase. Following the workshop, guests will enjoy local oysters, shellfish and Baja yellowtail crudo station, along with interaction and kelp forest education by Reef Check. 25% of all ticket sales will be donated to Reef Check, a non-profit organization leading citizen scientists to promote stewardship of sustainable reef communities worldwide, including San Diego's local kelp forests. This event is in alignment with Garibaldi’s commitment to protecting the waters right here in San Diego, having recently received recognition from the James Beard Foundation as Smart Catch Committed restaurant for their seafood sustainability efforts. San Dieguito Art Guild presents its eleventh annual Holiday Bazaar on Saturday, November 26, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Encinitas Community Center, 1140 Oakcrest Park Drive (corner of Encinitas Blvd and Balour), Encinitas. The San Dieguito Art Guild, is a 200-member all-volunteer nonprofit organization that operates the Off Track Gallery located in the Lumberyard Shopping Center in Encinitas. Run by a board of 15 elected Directors, SDAG was organized in 1965 by a group of artists for the purpose of promoting greater understanding and appreciation of the fine arts. Karen Fidel, one of the event organizers, says, “This event gives local artists a venue to offer their hand-made items to the public. And gives the shoppers a chance to purchase one-of-a-kind artworks, which cannot be found in chain stores. There are no imported items at this Bazaar. In addition, the buyer is purchasing work directly from the artist and can meet them face to face.” Guild President Judianne Shannon says, “Even if you have been to our Holiday Bazaar in the past, there are new artists and new items to see. All of our artists have been juried into this show so that the buyer can be assure of a quality product.” There will be a Silent Auction of artworks donated by the participating artists. Cheryl DeLain, jewelry artist says, “Our artwork is special because it is from all local artists and often of local scenes. Our Bazaar features really special deals on silent auction items where the proceeds help support our Off Track Gallery.” Each of the participating artists have a real passion for their craft and it shows. The Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) is hosting its 13th annual Human Rights Watch Film Festival from February 2 to 9. The Human Rights Watch Film Festival will feature critically acclaimed films on topics including child care and education, environmental protection, gender equity, trans and Indigenous rights, women’s rights and more. On February 9, MOPA and Human Rights Watch will feature a special Q&A with the filmmakers behind "Uýra" (2022) About the film: Uýra, a transgender Indigenous artist, travels through the Amazon on a journey of self-discovery using performance art to teach Indigenous youth that they are the guardians of ancestral messages of the Amazon Forest. In a country that kills an incredibly high number of transgender, Indigenous and environmentalist youth of any country , Uýra leads a rising movement while fostering unity and providing inspiration for the LGBTQIA+ and environmental movements in the heart of the Amazon Forest. This event will feature director Juliana Curi, producer Martina Sönksen and special guests. ADMISSION The Human Rights Watch Film Festival team does not want the cost of watching these films to be a barrier for participation.
