Thick Pile consists of work in painting, sculpture, collage, photography, and video. The exhibition was not conceptualized around any distinct theme or topic, but rather assembled at the instinctive whim of its curator. Pile is a word used in the soft flooring industry to define the length of the fibers and loops in a carpet or area rug. A thick pile carpet, because of its abundance of fibrous material, offers maximum comfort while magnifying its capacity to accumulate filth over time. The curator’s intention is not to connect the works in this show through these concomitant but conflicting themes of luxury and revulsion, one that is central to his own studio practice, but rather assemble the exhibition in much the same manner that he accumulates materials and ideas for his own artworks. Using intuition, he has gathered and arranged these works in the gallery to attempt an exchange through approximation between objects and images that may initially seem disparate. His aim is to cast a light that may reveal nuanced approaches to reading and experiencing each of the works in this exhibition and, more generally, each artists’ studio practices. And, for him, whether or not his attempt is effective, he can rest assured that the gallery is filled with a lot of very good art. Read more about the artists here. A historic vase, a pottery vessel, a historic ink bottle placed on a table — though seemingly simple, everyday artifacts are still exciting to an artist’s brush. Create your own still life painting inspired by local artifacts from the Center’s collections. Materials will be provided. About the Instructor Jean C. Wheat was born in Harlem, New York City. Her first one woman show was on the underside of her grandmother’s kitchen table when she was three years old. Through the years Jean’s passion for creative expression has grown from underneath that kitchen table to hanging on walls around the world and public art commissions in the United States. In 1989 Jean received a scholarship to study fine art at the University of Madrid, Spain. Jean taught African American Art History for sixteen yearn at San Diego Community College. For the past 20 years Jean has been a volunteer grandparent to foster children at San Pasqual Academy in California where she shares her life and art experiences with the students and others. Summer Movies in the Park is the largest free and family-friendly outdoor movie series in San Diego County, with dozens of hosting sites and over a hundred screenings. It launched in 2007 as a ‘take back our parks’ initiative – in sync with the County’s Live Well vision to sustain safe, healthy and thriving communities. Shows run May through October, in neighborhoods from the beach to the desert, and everything in between. Each movie event gives residents a reason to visit their local parks after dark, deterring inappropriate loitering and park use, and bringing additional safety and security to residents’ favorite locales. Events begin as early as 5 p.m., though actual movie start times are 15 minutes after sunset. Before the movie, many locations provide additional entertainment like arts and crafts, games, costume contests, music, dancing and food trucks. FAQ: What should I bring? Plan to bring chairs or blankets for your comfort. Chairs are not provided at any of our events. Also, feel free to pack a picnic and enjoy your meal under the stars! Some locations will have food available, so check the Event Specifics section of each location and date for more details. Bring a sweater or light jacket – it will cool down once the sun sets. What if it rains? In the event of rain or high winds a movie may be canceled. Monique Santander is a Chilean American artist, who has resided in Solana Beach since 2015. Monique came to United States in 1979, pursuing her creative dream in New York City. Her abstract art is known internationally for her expression in color, form and movement. Monique has exhibited in Chile, Germany, Greece, Mexico, Canada and at various galleries in Miami Beach, New York City and the Hamptons. She paints intuitively but meticulously, layering layers of textures, colors and marks while following her feelings and connection to herself, to the colors and the canvas. She loves experimenting with different color combinations, new techniques and new ways to apply the color onto the canvas. This exhibition is representative of a fresh energy and excitement in the Solana Beach Design District, where Art Scene West Gallery is promoting local art creation and collaboration.
