Come one, come all, Escondido’s oldest and most famous event, the Grape Day Festival, returns on Saturday, September 9th, 2023 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. The festival will take place in Grape Day Park, home to the original festivals in the heart of Escondido and next to our beautiful City Hall and the California Center for the Arts. The Festival will once again celebrate the early days of Escondido, when agriculture was “King” and festival goers traveled from all across the state to see why Escondido was hailed as a great place to grow sweet grapes and a central hub of citrus and other crops. This year, the History Center is once again bringing the Grape Day Festival to life, with a focus on celebrating the traditions of Escondido’s glorious past. Robin Fox, from the Escondido History Center recalls, “Grape Day is Escondido’s one-day history lesson, as well as a fun time for the whole family. The 2023 festival is a family-friendly event, featuring old time entertainment from Swing Jazz to Bluegrass and other talented musical acts from the early 1900’s throughout the event. Across Grape Day Park will be artisans and crafters, showing how things were made back in the day, with live demonstrations of such things as spinning, weaving, corn shelling and grinding and butter making. Kids can learn old-fashioned children’s games, get their faces painted and balloons twisted. Antique farm and mining machinery as well as early-century vehicles will be on display for all to see. Take off your shoes and stomp some grapes, eat free table grapes, like they did back in the original festival, and let the kids enjoy the 4-H petting zoo and meet some exotic animals up close. Hollandia Dairy will be onsite with a cow milking display as well. Taste the local flavor and head over to the wine and beer garden to savor the area's finest local wines and craft beers, with wineries participating from all across San Diego. There is a cost for wine and beer tasting, tickets available onsite on the day of the event. Only 21 and up permitted in the wine and beer tasting area. There will also be a food court, with tasty food offerings for everyone to enjoy, from Mexican food to Barbeque. Also, enjoy ice cream, hot popcorn, roasted peanuts, shaved ice, and cold drinks while you take in the festival. Local Native American, first responder, and other community organizations will be there to showcase their contributions to the community. ArtWalk San Diego brings back its popular Summer Series, expanding this year to Liberty Station. This celebrated series of smaller-scale art shows will take place in the heart of Little Italy, in the Piazza della Famiglia and adjacent on Date Street, on Sundays, June 25, and July 23 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and at ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station on Fridays, June 2, and July 7 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. The two Liberty Station events will be held in the North Promenade in conjunction with the popular “First Friday” ARTS DISTRICT, Liberty Station’s monthly celebration of all things creative. The monthly program offers an opportunity to meet working artists, discover outdoor public art installations, all while wandering and exploring the historic Liberty Station. The mini shows will display just 20-30 artists in an intimate setting, representing a variety of art mediums, including painting, sculpture, glass work, fine jewelry, photography and more. On Monday, Feb. 13, Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego hosts a media and public open house from 10 a.m. to noon to promote the launch of EPCAPE, a year-long study of clouds and aerosols that will be conducted from Scripps Pier and Mount Soledad. The project is led by the federal Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement facility and Scripps Oceanography scientists. The chief scientists from Scripps - Lynn Russell and Dan Lubin -, as well as Gerald (Gary) Geernaert, DOE Director, Earth and Environmental Systems Sciences Division and other DOE officials, will be in attendance. Researchers will launch an instrumented balloon at 11 a.m. that will produce data of atmospheric conditions as it rises. Members of the public are welcome to explore the pier and the science taking place. Join us for a rewarding morning of cleaning, socializing, and making a positive impact on our community and the environment. Bring Your Own Supplies: We encourage all attendees to bring their own buckets, gloves, and trash pickers to help clean up the neighborhood effectively. However, if you don't have these supplies, don't worry! We will have some available for you to borrow, thanks to North Park Main Street. Light Breakfast Provided: Thank you to Nomad Donuts, who is generously providing bagels & cream cheese for the first 30 volunteers. Come early to get a light breakfast before heading out. Join The Forum Carlsbad and San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum at Discovery Days this summer. Guests can enjoy five rotating, hands-on, mobile, innovative exhibits in the garden area, designed to engage families in exciting STEM based learning challenges. The exhibit descriptions are below: Rigamajig: This set of wooden planks, wheels, pulleys, nuts, bolts and rope allows children to learn about engineering and craftsmanship through play. Children get a chance to use their hands and problem solve to build anything they can imagine. Light Wall: Experiment with light and design using giant, colored pegs on the light wall. Literacy, shapes, patterns and more are reinforced with this hands-on exhibit. Imagination Playground: Discover the fundamentals of architecture using large foam blocks. Children’s collaboration skills will be put to the test as they work together to complete challenges. Snap Circuits: Snap Circuits is a kit with pieces that snap together to create complete circuits. Children and grownups can easily follow projects to light up a light bulb, make a fan spin, and even create noise with a speaker. This exhibit is a great way for children to learn about electricity, engineering and circuits. Wind Tunnel: This exhibit allows children to experiment with aerodynamics. They will explore how lift, drag and air pressure affect a flying object. Little ones will launch a scarf into the wind tunnel and watch as it floats to the top or gets stuck at the bottom. Ramps: Playing with ramp systems helps children explore and discover how structure affects elevation, speed, distance and motion. This collection of loose parts can be combined in many ways — making the construction possibilities endless. Coding: With colored markers, paper and Ozobots, children discover the magic of coding. Weaving is an ancient craft; it shelters and clothes as well as adorns our spaces, adding texture, color, design and inspiration to our lives. But it is the actual Process of Weaving that has caught the attention of so many as we’ve stepped into this new century. The practice of selecting fibers + natural objects; warping a loom; guiding weft through the vertical foundation; creating pattern/texture as the process unfolds…. These steps continue to connect us with the past, and more importantly, with ourselves. Join in this Weaving Workshop as we weave intuitively and work together in a space of creativity and openness. I will provide guidance in a variety of Weaving Techniques and will surround you with warped looms to work on, tools to learn with, natural fibers, and foraged and gathered natural objects to incorporate into your weavings. Feel free to bring your own items to weave into your piece, especially if there are any fibers/yarns, stones/crystals, shells, leaves/grasses, etc. that you’d like to experiment with. Each Weaver will complete a one-of-a-kind Woven Textile. I’ll have rods on hand for those who would like to adapt their pieces into Wall Hangings. And, if you find that you’re in love with the practice, you’ll have an option to purchase the loom you are working with, as well as additional fiber and tools to continue at home.
