July 17 – 21 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Upcycling Denim This week of Summer Camp is all about fashion design. Learn basic sewing techniques, practice design and drawing skills and then bring your idea to life in a wearable work of art. This 5-day camp will be exercising different techniques every day! We will be upcycling old denim and making our very own custom creations. Use one of our sewing machines or bring your own. Beginners welcome! This camp is recommended for 8-18yrs. Upcycled denim jackets and all other materials provided. Sewing machines are available for borrow. What to bring: A sun hat or sunscreen if your child is sensitive to sun. It’s best to dress in layers. We will be outdoors. Bring a refillable water bottle with water in it and a snack (no sugar or peanut products please). Bring your sewing machine if you have one. If not, let us know you need to borrow. There is an afternoon Sewing Summer Camp from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. this same week. If you’d like your camper to stay, there’s a $20 fee for the week to cover the 1-hr gap. They can bring a lunch and have lunch with us with the option to do some fun crafts after lunch. This exhibition seeks raw, psychological, primal work in any medium or form, except installations. It may include realism, abstraction or a hybrid of both. Puppet Lab: Breathing Life into Story is an invitation to discover the magic of ensemble puppetry. No experience necessary-- just a willingness to have serious fun. First, learn more about the amazing world of puppetry (it's not just socks and Muppets!) and explore the basic principles of breath, focus, and movement. Then, work together in a small group to breathe life into your own Bunraku-style puppet character and devise original short stories to share. Warning: This workshop may culminate in a puppet/puppeteer dance-off. This workshop will take place in Hattox Hall, part of the Karen and Donald Cohn Education Center if The Old Globe in beautiful Balboa Park.

The 101st annual Coronado Flower Show is set to take place, April 15-16, 2023. Organized by the Coronado Floral Association (CFA), this is the largest tented flower show in the U.S. and Coronado’s longest running tradition, which includes an array of events leading up to and throughout the two-day festival. This year’s event theme is Hollywood in Bloom. The main event, The Coronado Flower Show, is divided into five divisions – Horticulture, Design, Special Exhibits, Youth and Botanical Arts. The show has been a spring tradition since 1922 and is one of the largest tented flower show in the U.S. Located at Spreckels Park, this two-day event includes landscape displays, a variety of floral competitions, educational lectures and demonstrations, live bandstand entertainment, food, a beer & wine garden with locally crafted beers, and shopping. The final performance of San Diego Unified School District’s (SDUSD) middle school honor band and orchestra will occur on Saturday, February 4 at Point Loma Nazarene University from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. It features the finest middle school Honor Band students. These are auditioned groups, including the best players selected to rehearse and perform under the direction of two special guest conductors for an enriching musical experience. Students actively engaged in and activity funded, at least in part, by The VAPA Foundation, which strives to enhance the quality of and access to arts education in the SDUSD.
