Come make a wish! A FREE, Family event. The ribbon cutting for the butterfly maze at Chollas Lake will be from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday March 22nd celebrating Spring Equinox. It will be a Sharing... meaning that you bring something to share. That could be food, beverage or you play music or plant a flower in the butterfly garden or something else… The name of this interactive installation is "The Wishing Machine." It is an extension of my body of work: Urban Succession. It is a maze made of raised planter boxes that are filled with butterfly flowers. The center of the maze is a wishing well. Around 300 students from Patrick Henry High researched the ecosystem of Chollas Lake and illustrated their studies onto the sides of the boxes. I hand made the bricks of the wishing well and painted the words wishing well in the 6 main languages of City Heights. (Under the roof is “The Secret Sky”) Many people and organizations have collaborated in the making of this project. Lumber Cycle donated the wood, Biology Through Art donated the paint, and City Farmers Nursery donated the soil. The annual butterfly migration is underway. For decades scientists have relied on volunteers to tag butterflies to provide details about their journey.

Everyone in the community is invited to attend Wings of Hope, hosted by The Elizabeth Hospice, on Sunday, April 27, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. This event will take place at the California Center for the Arts, located at 340 N. Escondido Blvd in Escondido. Attendees will have the opportunity to honor and celebrate the special people who have touched their lives. Admission is free. Attendees will receive a butterfly for release, listen to live music, hear uplifting messages from The Elizabeth Hospice’s grief support team, and enjoy sweet treats. The Elizabeth Hospice, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit healthcare leader, has been providing hospice care, palliative care and grief support services to children and adults in San Diego County and Southwest Riverside County since 1978. The organization’s highly trained grief counselors help children and adults understand their feelings and thoughts and guide them through the process of coping with the death of a loved one. Grief support services are available to everyone in the community, including those who do not have a patient affiliation with The Elizabeth Hospice. No one needing these services has ever been turned away for financial reasons. In support of the organization’s nonprofit mission, a donation of $50 is suggested to reserve a Painted Lady Butterfly. The Fleet Science Center is proud to announce A Celebration of Science, a new public event taking place on Saturday, May 10, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Fleet in Balboa Park. Originally developed in collaboration with the National Science Foundation (NSF) as part of its 75th anniversary, the event will move forward despite the recent termination of two federally funded NSF grants: “STEM in Your Neighborhood” (SiYN), a $3.7 million dollar grant for efforts in Southeastern San Diego, and subsequent $100,000 NSF event grant. A Celebration of Science will feature community partners, hands-on activities, over 100 interactive exhibits, and multiple screenings of the documentary film "Flight of the Butterflies" in the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater. “This is not the news we hoped to share,” said Dr. Mwenda KudumuBiggs, Vice President of Community Service and Engagement at the Fleet Science Center. “But the Fleet and our SiYN grant partners remain committed to working together to connect everyone in our community to the power of science." Due to the termination of funding, the event will not be free, but the Fleet is offering a significantly reduced admission of $5 dollars to ensure broad community access. Internal resources and resilient community partnerships will make this family friendly celebration possible. “For the last 12 years the Fleet has worked with communities from Escondido to San Ysidro, and they all have stories to tell about science and scientists in their neighborhoods,” KudumuBiggs continued. “With funding being cut and scientific research being publicly devalued, these community stories are more important than ever to inspire the next generation of scientists.
