This month’s art walk will feature Yiddishland’s First Anniversary celebration and surprise guests. Ashton Gallery at Art on 30th proudly presents "Our Collective American Memory" Art Opening and Exhibition. The show is an adaptation of the Smithsonian’s widely acclaimed book, The History of America in 101 Objects, written by Dr. Richard Kurin, Smithsonian Distinguished Scholar and Ambassador-at-Large. The show will feature a collection of unmistakably nostalgic American images including Julia Child’s kitchen, Abraham Lincoln’s stovepipe hat, Dorothy’s slippers and of course, the American flag, all created by Ashton’s Gallery’s Resident Professional artists. You will have the opportunity to explore the exhibition Exchanging Words: Women and Letters in Seventeenth-Century Dutch Genre Painting (September 21- December 31, 2022), hear talks on works in the Timken's permanent collection, receive lesson plans and participate in hands-on learning experiences. All attendees will have a chance to network with other educators over wine and light appetizers and receive free bus transportation to the Timken for their classrooms. Artist Yaw Owusu will be "in-residence" and working from 3-5 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday from Sept. 9 through Oct. 9, 2022. From the museum: The Institute of Contemporary Art, San Diego (ICA San Diego) is excited to announce Yaw Owusu as the first Artist-in-Residence of our 2022-2023 Season Limitless Growth, Limited World, marking the artist’s first solo exhibition in San Diego. What is the value of a penny? This question is at the center of Artist-in-Residence Yaw Owusu’s exhibition A Penny, for What It’s Worth in which Owusu deconstructs the exchange rates of copper through the different stages of being; from raw material, to monetary value, to art, to the art market. Art lovers can observe Owusu’s elaborate artistic process as he employs unique techniques for oxidizing pennies, altering the copper coins into varying hues of bronze, blue, gold, green, pink, black and white for his visually striking sculptural wall pieces. Owusu’s transformation of something as common as a penny into pieces of art captures new perspectives on value when recontextualized. The copper used in the construction of pennies has doubled in value since 2016, and due to inflation is worth more than the penny itself. By uniting the raw material with the penny’s monetary value, Owusu transforms the depreciated copper into art objects whose value is decided by social, cultural, and economic exchange. The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organization dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling. It is a celebration of both the raconteur, who breathes fire into true tales of ordinary life, and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. At the center of each performance is, of course, the story – and The Moth’s directors work with each storyteller to find, shape and present it. Since its launch in 1997, The Moth has presented thousands of stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide.

Ekphrastic poets find their inspiration in works of visual art. The poems they write imagine, describe or expand upon the “story” of an image, and each individual poet creates unique works of poetic art, separate from but related to the visual art. In this workshop Sarah Z. Sleeper will teach you methodologies so that you can confidently approach this exciting cross-genre art space. You will work in the lovely Inspirations Gallery and will create one or more of your own ekphrastic poems. The art will be the current show in Inspirations, “Threads of Inspiration.” Please Note: This class will be held IN PERSON at our space in Inspirations Gallery (2730 Historic Decatur Rd., Suite 204, San Diego, CA, 92106). While masks are not required, they are encouraged. Thank you!

Show you care by dining where it matters. Promises2Kids has partnered with 37 local restaurants to raise funds for 3,000 San Diego foster children. The campaign will run throughout the month of May, in celebration of National Foster Care Month. Each restaurant will designate select menu items which will support the Foodies 4 Foster Kids campaign. Funds raised will benefit foster children by reuniting siblings living apart in foster care, supporting high school and college students in reaching their educational goals, providing birthday gifts, school clothes and opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities, and providing an emergency shelter where children feel safe and cared for.
