The Stoke Sessions conference, featuring keynote speakers Tony Hawk and Steve Hawk, Dian Hadiani, and Selema Masekela, is the second international conference organized and hosted by San Diego State University’s Surf and Skate Studies Collaborative. Join us for a conference that brings together scholars from all backgrounds and disciplines – humanities, social and natural sciences, cultural studies, ethnic studies, Indigenous studies, sports studies, etc. in a comprehensive examination of surfing and skateboarding. We welcome graduate and undergraduate students, writers, journalists, community activists, professional and casual surfers/skaters to join us in a celebration of, and critical reflection upon, the culture, history and politics of surfing and skateboarding and their various progeny like snowboarding, windsurfing, etc. The Stoke Sessions builds upon our previous conference, but with a wider scope that includes skateboarding and other board sports spawned by surfing. We plan to keep the new name and hope to make The Stoke Sessions a biennial, traveling conference that can be hosted by scholars from a variety of locales around the world. The second part of our plan is to link The Stoke Sessions conference to our new journal, Board Cultures: The International Journal of Surfing and Skateboarding Studies, published by San Diego State University Press. It is our goal to create a network of scholars around the globe that can connect once every other year through The Stoke Sessions conference and publish their research and art in a new venue dedicated to surfing and skateboarding studies. For over 60 years, Dr. Seuss’ illustrations have brought a visual realization to his fantastic and imaginary worlds. His artistic talent went far beyond the printed page and yet, to this day, his Secret Art Collection is virtually unknown to the general public. Throughout his lifetime, Theodor Seuss Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss) created paintings and sculpture, which he secreted away at the Dr. Seuss Estate. Exclusive Collections will share a compelling selection of artworks from "The Art of Dr. Seuss Collection" at the 212 S. Cedros Ave. #104, Solana Beach, California, Nov. 26 – Dec. 24. Hours are Monday - Saturday from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Visitors may explore and acquire works from Dr. Seuss’s best-known children’s books, as well as "The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss," a mind-expanding collection based on decades of artwork, which Dr. Seuss created at night for his own personal pleasure. Perhaps the wackiest and most wonderful elements of the collection are Dr. Seuss’s three-dimensional “Unorthodox Taxidermy” sculptures with names such as Carbonic Walrus, Two-Horned Drouberhannis, and Goo-Goo-Eyed Tasmanian Wolghast, to name a few. Additionally, Ted’s cat was never far from his artist thoughts. He drew himself as The Cat Behind the Hat, his cat was the protagonist in several of his Secret Art paintings and, as a fun aside, many of his early advertisements and cartoons had a “cat bystander” witnessing all the action. They hinted at his adventures across the world, his reclusive sensibility despite his fame, and his penchant for the childlike fantasy and humor, which infused nearly every facet of his life. Despite the unprecedented demand during his lifetime, no limited edition artworks were ever conceived, authorized, or created until this historic project began in 1997, six years after Geisel’s death. That year, this exclusive project put into motion a series of artworks and exhibitions, which firmly established him as one of the most iconic artistic talents of the 20th century. Each of these Estate-Authorized limited editions has been adapted and reproduced from Theodor Seuss Geisel’s original drawings, paintings, or sculptures. Additionally, each work bears a posthumously printed or engraved Dr. Seuss signature, identifying the work as an authorized limited edition commissioned by the Dr. Seuss Estate. From the gallery: Local pop artist Jon Savage will open his first solo exhibition for the month of December at The Studio Door titled ‘7250’. The show will present paintings and photographs interpreted as personal stories reflecting the visual journey of his life. The title, ‘7250’ is a reference to this timeline combining his birth year ’72 and turning 50. Self-taught, Savage has been fueled by artistic creativity for as long as he can remember. He developed a fascination with media and visual arts during his childhood years. His love for photography, video editing, cinematography, acting and painting propelled his passion. Throughout his Deaf childhood, he remained devoted to educating Deaf people about the linguistic, social, political and cultural issues of the Deaf community by traveling across states and countries to share his experiences. “Art makes the stripes go around,” said the artist in reference to his pop style. In 2011, Savage began creating contemporary art paintings based on people and classical subjects that inspired him by using abstract, bright colors and a clean style. He often incorporates stripes as a base for his figurative work to unify the message of each art piece. Savage has partnered with The Studio Door previously. In addition to exhibiting his artworks, Savage curated the 2017 national exhibition titled Artistry Through Deaf Eyes. The exhibit included the works of Deaf and Hard of Hearing artists. For many patrons, it was their first introduction to DE’VIA art. DE’VIA, also known as Deaf View/Image Art, reveals the Deaf Experience usually incorporating expressions of affirmation, resistance and liberation. “As a San Diego gallerist, I get excited to see artists, like Jon, who flourish over time and not become sidetracked by the challenges of the art scene. It feels like the right moment for Jon to share his work in such a monumental way.
