From the museum: "A Kind of Heaven" is an exhibition of recent paintings by Southern Californian visionary artists who imagine the world as another place, where alternatives to everyday reality are made manifest, and landscapes, animals, and people are transformed. As the visionary genre has matured, the paintings have become increasingly sophisticated. Techniques have evolved from early airbrush work to incorporating painterly finishes within the works, and the range has expanded to include grisaille painting and old masters’ techniques. The subject matter has expanded, too, influenced by developments in technology and neuroscience, which have added breadth to the subject matter available to artists working within the genre. Today’s visionary art began in California as outsider art in the 1930’s, inspired by immigrants who brought with them the ideas of the anti-authoritarian back-to-nature German "Wandervögel" movement and the aesthetics of "Jugendstil." It was profoundly influential on Disney animation artists, influencing films like the classic Fantasia. By the 1960s, visionary art had become the dominant expression of the hippy counter-culture, shaping the appearance of classic rock posters and album covers, and since then it has developed into a burgeoning field within the art world. A range of paths to this other world are treated with equal respect—"A Kind of Heaven" seeks common ground between visionaries, the conceptions of science fiction and fantasy, and intrepid explorers of the imagination. California is the land of imagination, the home of epic fantasies and wild creativity. The recipe for the show is a dash of Hieronymus Bosch, a taste of alternative reality, and a generous helping of dreams. He is a champion of art that emerges from popular culture and shapes the spirit of the age. His book Elephant - the story of the invention of the American avant-garde - will be published later this year. He is Professor of Art at California Lutheran University. San Diego New Music, in conjunction with the Athenaeum Music and Arts Library, continues its 2022-23 season with a concert curated by San Diego Symphony principal oboist, Sarah Skuster. Inspired by the ancient Greek concept that the universe is comprised of four elements - earth, water, fire and air - this program, entitled "Stoicheía/Elements" explores how these elements are used to share musical stories and create innovative musical landscapes. London's White Cube opens its first New York art gallery with a show focused on how contemporary art can reference and distort prior creations to resist established power and value systems.

Music Director Rafael Payare leads the Orchestra in works by two of Venezuela’s most notable composers. Antonio Estévez’s best-known music is the 1954 Cantata Criolla, a lively work based on the Venezuelan mythic poem about a singing contest between Florentino and the Devil. And Evencio Castellanos’ Santa Cruz de Pacairigua is filled with the influences of the country’s folk melodies, popular dance rhythms and even medieval carols. Plus, French composer Paul Dukas’ La Péri, a dance poem based on a Persian folk story, is filled with grandiosity, mystery and introspection—and an ebullient fanfare closing. Note: gates for the Friday and Saturday performances will open at 6pm.

The United States Tennis Association Billie Jean King Girls’ 16s and 18s National Championships will be played Saturday, August 5 through Sunday, August 13, 2023 at Barnes Tennis Center, 4490 W. Point Loma Blvd., San Diego, CA, 92107. Over 400 of the top junior tennis players in the country, aged 16 and 18 and under, will compete for the title of National Champion. In addition, the following wild cards to the 2023 US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., will be awarded to the tournament’s top finishers. 18s Champion – US Open Main Draw and US Open Junior Main Draw 18s Finalist – US Open Junior Main Draw 18s 3rd Place – US Open Junior Main Draw 16s Champion – US Open Junior Main Draw 18s 4th & 5th Place – US Open Junior Qualifying “We are anticipating a very strong player field in both divisions for this year’s national championships. It’s going to be a spectacular event with so many talented players coming from across the country to play this tournament,” said Tournament Director Lornie Kuhle. “Fans coming to this event will get to watch the future of American women’s tennis as many of these players will play collegiate tennis and some will go on to compete on the WTA Tour.” Sofia Kenin, the 2015 Girls’ 18s champion, captured the Australian Open singles title in 2020 and achieved a career-high No. 4 in the WTA singles rankings. Coco Gauff, who reached the 18s semifinals in 2018, advanced to her first-career Grand Slam singles final at the 2022 French Open. Last August, Gauff became the No. 1 ranked doubles player in the world and this past October, she achieved a career-high No. 4 in the WTA singles rankings. The Girls’ 16s event will begin on Saturday, August 5 and conclude with the singles and doubles finals on Saturday, August 12. The Girls’ 18s tournament will get underway on Sunday, August 6 and conclude with the singles and doubles championships on Sunday, August 13. Both divisions feature 256-player singles draws with the top 32 players receiving a first-round bye. There will also be 128-team doubles draws with the top 16 teams getting first-round byes. The Opening Ceremony for the USTA Billie Jean King Girls’ 16s and 18s National Championships will take place at the Barnes Tennis Center on Saturday, August 5 at 4:30 p.m. (PDT). Art Scene West and Matt Drey Arts are co-producing an art exhibition of recent works by two well respected, veteran SoCal landscape artists, Darrel McPherson and John Cornfield. McPherson began painting in 1970, moving from abstract in his early work at Indiana University to his career commitment to landscape impressionism, influenced by Pissarro, McPherson paints exclusively in oils and has painted continuously up to the present. McPherson estimates a career total of 1500+ paintings and he has followers all over San Diego County and throughout California. John Cornfield has been drawing and painting for over 20 years, including with many of the top plein air artists in the country. Inspired by an older generation of Southwest and California Impressionists, Cornfield's landscapes follow in their unique use of color and form. Cornfield’s paintings are found in private and public collections throughout southern California. A graduate of UCSD, Cornfield has many local San Diego followers. Many of his collectors say that his paintings evoke a sense of “vintage California”. Cornfield paints exclusively in acrylics.
