dohee lee (she/her) is a Performance Artist, Ritualist, and Educator from Jeju Island South Korea.  Since her arrival in the USA, she has been a vital contributor to both the traditional and contemporary arts landscape of the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.  Her creative and award-winning vision comes from traditional Korean music, singing, drumming and dance, which is rooted in Korean indigenous ritual. dohee invites the CSUSM campus community to join in on a Korean ritual from Jeju Island called “The Ritual of Sickness” (Chilseong Saenamgut-칠성새남굿). dohee lee will explore this ritual as a contemporary performance and communal process where the aim is to remove white supremacy culture and to call in vital spirits (Chilseong-칠성신 **) back to humanity and land. “Chilseong Saenamgut-칠성새남굿” is a dedication to the struggling earth and marginalized communities most vulnerable to environmental racism, and an invitation for us all to confront and heal from our own internalized racism. Future generations will ultimately understand our unprecedented times of pandemic, crazed demagogues, and failed insurrections through the art and stories that come out of this period in history. Artists, writers, playwrights, and filmmakers will construct funhouse-mirror reflections capturing the loss, chaos, and bewilderment, along with the courage, innovation, and resilience of human beings finding their way through the confusion of the early 21st century. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, I wrote ‘flash fiction’ (short, quickly written stories) to wrap my mind and heart around the days and nights of contagion, quarantine, and masks in a private vigil for better tomorrows. In collaboration with composer and musician Mike Mare, Temple of Story offers a fascinating exploration into the process of how my stories are created in a fusion of images, sound, and text. In this exhibition, viewers will take a stroll through a forest of fables with drawings on the walls to illuminate their path. Graphic narratives erupting with bursts of magical realism will be integrated with Mare’s atmospheric music and sound design, allowing them to discover an intimacy with an unseen storyteller. The Hausmann Quartet and Maritime Museum of San Diego are excited to partner to present the eighth season of "Haydn Voyages: Music at the Maritime", a quarterly concert series performed aboard one of the Museum’s historic world-class vessels, the 1898 steam ferryboat Berkeley that operated for 60 years on San Francisco Bay. Four concerts will be performed throughout the year at the Maritime Museum February 26, May 21, September 17 and November 19. All concerts are Sundays at 2:30, and include an intermission for a total length of under two hours. Each creative program will also include informative and entertaining commentary between selections from noted UC Santa Barbara musicologist Derek Katz. Join the Women’s Museum of California for a virtual lunchtime lecture on Tuesday, December 13 featuring artist/activist Desiree Aspires. Learn about the intersection of art and activism and how Desiree founded Printmakers Against Racism during the pandemic and raised over $50,000 for Black Lives Matter and other causes. Desiree Aspiras (she/her) is an educator, therapist, and printmaker in San Diego who deeply values how art can transform us and connect us to meaning. Her printmaking and book arts projects have been exhibited in spaces in San Diego, including the Athenaeum Art Center. She is the founder of Printmakers Against Racism, a project she started which engages printmakers across the world to make and sell prints and donate their proceeds to support racial justice. She is also a mindfulness facilitator and founder of Deep Breath Network, where she hopes to create diverse and welcoming spaces to share contemplative practices to support personal and social transformation with changemakers here in San Diego and beyond. She currently teaches at University of San Diego and Bastyr University California. She earned her Masters in Marital and Family Therapy from the University of San Diego and BA in Political Science from UCLA.
