Join UC San Diego for our Intersections Concert Series at Park & Market in the Guggenheim Theatre hosted by UC San Diego and New York-based violinist Yale Strom, one of the world’s leading ethnographer-artists of klezmer and Romani music and history. Jeff Nevin Jeff Nevin studied conducting at the Pierre Monteux School with Charles Bruck and was conductor of the Southwestern College Symphony Orchestra from 2013-2021. While his professional work has leaned more towards performing as a mariachi musician, soloist and band leader, his experience in these areas combined with his training and expertise as a symphonic conductor gives him a unique perspective on the interpretation of Mexican symphonic music, including the works of Revueltas, Chavez, Moncayo, Galindo, Marquez and others. Mariachi Garibaldi From Southwestern College Performing ensemble from Southwestern College, the first school in the world to offer a college degree in mariachi music. Many former students have moved on to receive Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music, perform mariachi professionally including with some of the top mariachis in the country, and they are beginning to fill the great need for mariachi instructors that exists across the US today. Mariachi Garibaldi has been featured in both American and Mexican national news broadcasts and several documentaries, they have performed across the US and Mexico, and recently performed in Brazil (2019 & 2014), Egypt (2018), Belgium (2017), Germany (2016), India (2015), Canada (2015), Russia (2012 & 2009), France (2012 & 2010) and China (2010). Fiesta de Reyes in Old Town San Diego State Historic Park is extending what is normally a one-day celebration to include the entire weekend this year. It is a free, family-friendly experience designed to bring the spirit of the celebration to life for San Diegans of all ages. The experience will run from May 5 through May 7. The gates will be open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday. The Fiesta de Reyes courtyard at the north end of the state park will be full of vibrant décor, traditional Mexican street food stations, mariachis as well as folklorico dancing and local music entertainers on the Fiesta de Reyes stage. Face painters will be on hand during the weekend. The Fiesta de Reyes courtyard is surrounded by 19 specialty shops offering gift items from clothing to jewelry, toys and home décor as well as locally produced chocolate, olive oil products and hot sauces. Guests wanting a more thrilling experience can try a guided ghost tour of local haunts in the park. Casa de Reyes Restaurant in the middle of the Fiesta de Reyes plaza is featuring traditional Mexican recipes along with specialty drinks all served in a warm al fresco setting. Additional dining options include stands selling tamales, elotes, churros, champurada and other foods and drinks.

Tracing back to 1942, thousands of Filipino and American prisoners of war were force-marched on a 65-mile course from Mariveles to San Fernando, and from the Capas Train Station to various camps. Many prisoners have lost their lives to starvation, disease, and wanton killings. Unfortunately, the Bataan Death March ended with only 54,000 survivors reaching the camp. The long march has ended but the survivors' fight for rights and benefits is still in motion even after more than 80 years. This coming April 14, 2023, witness "A Long March", the riveting and heartfelt documentary by T.S Botkin following the Filipino-American veterans' as they emotionally trace their paths from war to erasure by the U.S. Government in search of broken promises. The virtual screening is scheduled at 3:30 p.m. PDT followed by a Q&A portion with filmmaker T.S. Botkin at 4:30 p.m. PDT, moderated by Prof. Jennifer Derilo, Prof. Kirin Macapugay, Prof. Judy Patacsil, and Jhelen Ramirez -- all descendants of survivors of the Bataan Death March and WWII Veterans. This is a free screening event presented by the San Diego Community College District in partnership with San Diego Filipino Cinema.

Balboa Park's House of Ukraine presents a fundraising night of Ukrainian music and culture. Special guest performers Balaklava Blues will bring the ancient sounds of Ukraine to San Diego by performing stunning vocal polyphonies from the winter song traditions deeply ingrained in Ukrainian households worldwide. To ensure a prosperous new year, songs of good tidings will be sung, including Schedryk, the famous Ukrainian new years song that became Carol of the Bells. All proceeds from the event will go towards continuing House of Ukraine's humanitarian relief efforts.

The first, Prelude to "Afternoon of a Faun," made his international reputation for its unashamed sensuality and dreamy delicacy. The second, Fantaisie for Piano and Orchestra, is remarkable for its lushness, unlike anything else the composer wrote. And who better than the amazing pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet to be at the keyboard? Then Rafael Payare will be on the podium for Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, which abounds in gorgeously colorful melodies that range from child-like innocence to deep explorations of the human soul. Our Food Cycle program allows community members who can't compost at home to still divert their food waste. We have a triple bin aerated static pile system that is on a precise timeline to get food scraps cooking and turned into finished compost to be sent back out into the community as fast as possible. Our team of volunteers is instrumental in this process! Every month we need help harvesting finished compost from one of our bins to make way for the next round of pile building. Join in and learn about composting and the amazing bokashi method!
