An original Spanish-language family comedy by Soledad Escobedo, Tierra Caliente presents “My Little Treasure for Rent.” As the sun rises on one of the many Mexican communities in the highest part of Cerro del Bernal, an impoverished single mother is forced to decide between selling or renting out her "little treasure." Enjoy this delightful family comedy written and directed by Soledad Escobedo and performed by the theater students of Tierra Caliente Academy with a special guest appearance by Fernando Bernal. Buddhist Week at PHES Gallery commences with an opening ceremony, filled with music and chanting to consecrate the site for the sacred sand mandala. The schedule includes meditations, lectures, hands-on experiences, and more! We close the week with a special Dissolution Ceremony where the monks sweep up the completed mandala and release the sand into the ocean.   • Enjoy classic holiday tunes from Tchaikovsky, Chopin, Piazzolla and more in this four hands piano concert by Yumiko Oya & Naomi Hobbs with Ephraim Raitman on percussion. Naomi Hobbs was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. She earned her Music Degree at the Musashino Academia Musicae in Tokyo, where she also taught for ten years. In 1998, one year before she moved to San Diego, she performed Rachmaninoff’s 2nd Piano Concerto with the Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra. She was the instructor of Music and Piano class at San Diego Community College district for Ten years. She was the first prize winner of the 7th International Piano Competition in Mexico in 2012 and the gold medalist of 6th Seattle International Piano Competition in 2015. Yumiko Oya grew up in Tokyo, Japan. She began playing piano at the age of three. After moving to the US in 1990, she began studying music theory at Orange Coast College. She was invited to play as a soloist, Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.4 with it’s orchestra at their annual concert. Further study earned Yumiko her Master’s degree in Piano Performance at the California Institute of the Art. Since then Yumiko has been actively performing as a soloist and with various ensembles. Gallery 21, Spanish Village, Balboa Park October 11 - 24, 2022 Chinese Brush Painting Society Exhibit The Flow of Ink and Color Gallery Hours: 11 am - 4 pm daily, free admission Open House: Sunday, October 16, 3 to 5 pm Original artwork by members of the Chinese Brush Painting Society (CBPS) of San Diego created using the traditional tools of this ancient art form (rice paper, ink, colors, and animal hair brushes). Detailed and spontaneous brush painting styles, depicting both traditional and contemporary subjects, will be on display - highlighting the diversity and breadth of techniques used by modern brush artists. Our artists range from students to accomplished painters and calligraphers, many who have studied with masters in China.
