  • Artists and Repertoire: Rafael Payare, conductor Marc-André Hamelin, piano Richard Wagner: Prelude & Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde Franz Liszt: Piano Concerto No. 2 in A Major Johannes Brahms: Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68 About the program: The exquisitely romantic Second Piano Concerto by Liszt is performed by the great Lisztian, Marc-André Hamelin, whom the New York Times hailed as “A performer of near-superhuman technical prowess.” Music Director Rafael Payare leads the Orchestra in Brahms’ Symphony No. 1, featuring one of the most famous openings in Romantic music, with the deep throbbing bass like a heartbeat, and a great arc of melody rising and falling — it seems so inevitable, so strong a way to begin this symphony. Note: gates for the Thursday performance will open at 6pm. An additional performance takes place Friday, Nov. 18 at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. • From the organizers: November 11th, we are extremely lucky to have @catekennan_ coming through in support of her upcoming album “The Arbitrary Dimension of Dreams,” being released through Los Angeles’ @postpresentmedium records. Joining Cate will be Tijuana-based gentle folk & sound artist, @surcarilita , and San Diego-based electronic performer 288__am , who will also be curating visuals for the evening. A little more on Cate’s sonic exploration: “Kennan’s sonic palette is vast yet harmonized, deftly matching spectral synthesizers to hazy lap steel guitars and watery analog effects. Existing in the sparsely occupied world of early melodic electronic music, her songs call to mind the sonic landscape’s of Malcolm Cecil, Hans-Joachim Roedelius, and Deux Filles.” Beautiful flyer by @lightgreenfellow Related links: The Brown Building on Instagram The Brown Building Arts on Instagram
  • The time period for the Spanish Baroque begins roughly in the 1580s and ends in the early 1700s. The art from this region is characterized by visual realism which was consistent with the rest of Europe. Spanish painters also frequently used dark colors and incorporated tenebrism, or strong light sources against primarily black backgrounds. Perhaps the more sombre style that evolved in Spain at this time was a result of Spain's war defeats at the hands of the Netherlands and England, which greatly affected their finances. Spanish Baroque painters were often sponsored by the Catholic Church. They were also heavily supported by the devout Hapsburg emperors who responded well to the severe and noble style of Catholic Counter-Reformation art, which brought religious themes to the masses. It was also the Spanish school in combination with the Dutch Baroque artist who importantly guided European painting toward more naturalism in painting. Spanish masters such as Diego Velasquez, Franciso de Zurbaran, and Juan Sanchez Cotan, and others will be highlighted in this docent-led talk. Follow on social media! Facebook + Instagram
