Project [BLANK], San Diego’s most innovative interdisciplinary music organization, will team up with Nick Lesley of Space Time for a concert of "illuminated music" featuring various methods of real-time image and sound manipulation. Central to the program is a screening of Studies by pioneering video artists Steina and Woody Vasulka. The concert will feature live musical performances and other video works that take inspiration from the Vasulkas’ early experiments in electronic image-making. As the next installment of Project [BLANK]’s Salty Series, "SPACE TIME ART" is curated by local musician and media artist Nick Lesley and features live performances by Helixhand and Kevin Schwenkler. The program will begin with a screening of Steina and Woody Vasulka’s rarely-seen, Studies, a series of evocative short films created in 1970 and 1971 that employ the couple’s early experiments in digital and analog processing. Following the screening, multimedia artist Helixhand (Ash Capachione) will perform a live audio-visual piece using digital film, machine generated imagery, and animation in cobination with improvised sound loops and found audio samples. Musician and composer Kevin Schwenkler will follow with a musical exploration of a series of still images featuring live electronics and audio-modulated processing. Skate Rising, a program that offers service opportunities and free skate instruction for children, is hosting a holiday jacket drive and learn-to-skate clinic 9-11 a.m. on Dec. 10 at the Encinitas Community Park. The six-year-old program is inviting girls ages 4-18 to bring new or lightly worn outerwear to donate to the Community Resource Center. Local Olympians and pro skateboarders will join the youth program in the service learning opportunity and to teach girls how to skateboard. Exposure Skate on Facebook and Instagram

The Vietnamese American Youth Alliance will welcome the Year of Cat with the 18th annual San Diego Tết Festival in Mira Mesa, a three-day event featuring lion dances, a Cultural Village, the Miss Vietnam Pageant, and Vietnamese food, music and vendors. New to this year’s Tết Festival, which takes place from Jan. 27-29 at Mira Mesa Community Park, is an eSports competition, which has become increasingly popular among Asian youths. The festival is the largest Lunar New Year festival in San Diego County, with more than 30,000 attendees each year. Festival hours are 5 p.m. – 10 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. Sunday at Mira Mesa Community Park. Admission is free. This year is unique as the Vietnamese population celebrates the Year of the Cat, while Chinese and other Asian countries celebrate the Year of the Rabbit.

One hundred years to the day after the historic discovery of King Tut’s tomb, "Beyond King Tut: The Immersive Experience," a new exhibition created in partnership with the National Geographic Society, will bring the magic and mystery of Ancient Egypt to the San Diego area, opening at the Wyland Center at the Del Mar Fairgrounds for a limited run beginning Jan. 27, 2023. Bringing to life the storied archives of the National Geographic Society in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of King Tut’s tomb discovery (November 1922), the highly anticipated exhibition combines the power of cinematic storytelling and soaring imagery to invite visitors into the golden king’s world like never before. This exhibition goes beyond a traditional artifact display using the power of photography and technology, ensuring that the artifacts from King Tut’s tomb remain in their country of origin. The multi-gallery, multi-sensory exhibition whisks guests on a time-traveling adventure to Ancient Egypt. With nine galleries to explore, "Beyond King Tut: The Immersive Experience" unlocks the 3,300 year old story of King Tut – his rule as a child pharaoh, his family, the discovery of his tomb and the mysteries surrounding his early death, and his journey to the afterlife.
