Join music, art, literary, and dance historian Victoria Martino in a five-week lecture series, celebrating the 150th anniversary of Diaghilev by rediscovering and redefining the scope of his immeasurable influence on modern culture. Who was Sergei Diaghilev? What did he do? Condemned by his own country as the ultimate exemplar of bourgeois decadence and depravity, he was excised from Soviet cultural history. Yet, in the international world of art, music, dance, and theater, he was revered, even idolized, as the greatest impresario of all time. Creator, critic, curator, Diaghilev played all these roles, defining for many the very meaning of contemporary art in the 20th century. In his role as founder and director of the legendary Ballets Russes, Diaghilev commissioned and patronized a veritable lexicon of artists, choreographers, composers, dancers, and designers: from Matisse to Picasso, Fokine to Massine, Debussy to Stravinsky, Nijinsky to Pavlova, Bakst to Chanel. In collaboration with San Diego New Music and the Athenaeum Music and Arts Library, percussionist and composer Nathan Hubbard presents his curated concert, "Mix and Match," which was originally scheduled for two years ago in March, 2020 — just before the pandemic forced performance cancellations. The project features an ensemble with Nathan Hubbard on vibraphone, Nicole Shue on violin, Sharon Taylor on cello, Ariana Warren on woodwinds and Anne Whattoff on vocals. Whatoff will perform on a set of "art songs," using lyrics by the late poet Dorothea Grossman. The first special exhibition at the newly reopening MCASD La Jolla campus will be a survey of works of Niki de Saint Phalle, who lived in La Jolla in the later years of her life. RELATED: Artist Niki de Saint Phalle's radical decade Niki de Saint Phalle in the 1960s is the first exhibition to survey the experimental work of French American artist Niki de Saint Phalle (1930–2002) during this pivotal decade, featuring numerous works from European collections that will be displayed in the United States for the first time. The exhibition explores a transformative ten-year period in Saint Phalle’s work when she embarked on two of her most significant series: the Tirs, or “shooting paintings,” and the exuberant sculptures of women she called Nanas. Affirming the artist’s place in postwar art history, this show highlights her prescient works of performance, participatory, and feminist art, as well as her many transatlantic projects and collaborations.Niki de Saint Phalle in the 1960s brings together major paintings, assemblages, and sculptures from this important chapter in the artist’s career, as well as extensive film and photographic documentation from the Niki Charitable Art Foundation and the Menil Collection Archives. Sunday, October 23, 2022, 1PM to 4PM PST Poem-Making With Jim Moreno, A Virtual Poem-Making Class Online via Zoom This three-hour class for beginning or seasoned poets will utilize the art of poetry to examine the existential background to the political foreground of the Mid Term election that is almost one month away. Poets like Robert Bly, Joy Harjo, Sonia Sanchez, Rumi, Yehuda Amichai, Yusef Komunyakaa and others will help us find humane solutions for our vote. Quotes from the likes of John Lewis, John Kennedy, Malala, and others will frame a portrait of sanity & fact to counter the Big Money mass media montage of misinformation, misdirection and mendacity that currently plagues our nation. This class will be taught in two 90-minute segments divided into quotes, film clips, poems, and stories from Jim Moreno’s experience as an artivist (artist and activist) in writing, teaching, and performing. Beginning and seasoned participants are welcomed to the Container of respect and safety that are the foundation of Moreno’s classes. If you are looking for a critique group, this is not the class for you. This is a write from your heart poem-making class. Are we sick and tired of the mass media bombardment going on for months yet? An out of state Big Money push trying to manuever our minds to vote yes when the truth of the candidate, the proposition, the issue, the theme, invites a simple no, a no vote, a realization of the background to the phony foreground of actus reus (“guilty act”), mens rea (“guilty mind.”) by the perpetrators of the mask hiding the truth. We now live in a world where women are ordered how to dress, ordered not to have a choice about how or when to not give life. We live in a country where combat machines may be used in our children’s school to end their lives. And the experts in segue shift the issue to more police; more police in our schools, more police in the streets. More scrutiny means less accuracy for the common sense solutions. The Chuck Jones Gallery has moved since the last San Diego Comic-Con — they’re now located near Little Italy — which is why this year, they’re teaming up with Sparks Gallery for a week of Looney Tunes, artwork, and more. Thursday, July 21 – Sunday, July 24, The Chuck Jones Gallery will be taking over Sparks Gallery for a pop-up. They’ll be showcasing both virtual experiences and animation/comic artwork. Attendees will be able to snap a selfie with a virtual Looney Tunes character in AR, experience virtual reality with the characters, and see great art. This year, Sparks Gallery will also feature and sell Surreal, Abstract, and Pop-inspired artworks from the gallery’s exhibited artists, who will be on-site to share their process and offer limited edition or original artwork.
