With his powerful, soulful voice, Murube will transport you straight to the heart of Spain, delivering a performance filled with beauty, fire, and tradition. Juan Murube will be accompanied by the amazing guitarist Juan Moro, and the incredible Alexandra Rozo will make a special guest artist flamenco dance appearance. This recital – "Cante Pa’lante" – is showcasing a wide range of flamenco song forms. While not as well-known in the US, flamenco singing – cante flamenco – is the most important aspect of flamenco. When performing with dancers, singers provide support by singing pa’tras – ‘from behind’. However, cante Flamenco is best showcased pa’lante – ‘in front’. This is how it is presented in major Spanish flamenco festivals. This recital – "Cante Pa’lante" – is in this tradition, showcasing a wide range of flamenco song forms. It is an opportunity to experience authentic cante flamenco in its entirety. Juan Murube has travelled across multiple continents participating in numerous flamenco projects, and while his preference is traditional flamenco (cante jondo), he also enjoys expressing his art with freedom. His creations and performances bring a particularly rich dimension to flamenco. Murube's latest album "Cambiático" is available now on all streaming platforms. Our cartoon is "Plane Crazy" (1928), the first Mickey Mouse cartoon to be produced... but the fourth to be released. Next is another important first: "The Lucky Dog" (1921). This Stan Laurel film features a character actor named Oliver Hardy. It would be five years before they made another film together, and made history! And our own Russ Peck will provide live piano music! In "One Good Turn" (1931), an elderly woman gives food to Depression victims Stan and Ollie, so they decide to help her out. Stan's young daughter Lois was upset that Stan always got the worst of it from Ollie, so in this film the tables are turned... Another first! Other films include "The Finishing Touch," "The Stolen Jools," "The Midnight Patrol," and our first showing of a special tribute to Oliver Hardy.   • Shelter to Soldier, in partnership with the Foundation for Women Warriors, will host its annual Sisterhood of Service event on Monday, May 11 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the beautiful Cape Rey Carlsbad Beach (1 Ponto Rd, Carlsbad, CA 92011). Presented by Cape Rey Carlsbad Beach, with Women of Service sponsor The Boeing Company, the event honors the strength, resilience and service of women veterans and active-duty military women. Now in its fourth year, Sisterhood of Service brings together women from all branches of the military for a day of connection, empowerment, and community. The event reflects a shared commitment by Shelter to Soldier and the Foundation for Women Warriors to uplift women who have served and address the unique challenges they face during and after military service. The event will begin with an all-levels yoga session, followed by refreshments, networking opportunities and access to resources tailored to the needs of women veterans. Attendees will also enjoy a catered lunch, hear from an inspirational guest speaker, and participate in an interactive goal-setting workshop.
