From the theater: The story that defined a generation is reimagined in a groundbreaking musical for a new generation. In 1967 Tulsa, Oklahoma, the hardened hearts, aching souls and romantic dreams of Ponyboy Curtis, Johnny Cade and their band of greasers take center stage in a fight for survival and a quest for purpose. Adapted from S.E. Hinton’s seminal book and Francis Ford Coppola’s iconic film, "The Outsiders" features a book by Adam Rapp, music and lyrics by Jamestown Revival (Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance) and Justin Levine, music supervision, arrangements & orchestrations by Justin Levine, choreography by Rick Kuperman & Jeff Kuperman and directed by Danya Taymor. ReBru Spirits, a distillery that takes unsold beer from local craft breweries and repurposes it into liquor, is celebrating the release of its latest creation California Whiskey on Friday, December 9 with a roaring 1920s-themed party at its Barrio Logan restaurant, bar, and speakeasy. The event starts at 7 p.m. and is free to attend, though there is a VIP experience that starts at 6 p.m. and includes a hosted bar and light bites. VIP tickets are $10 and can be purchased here. Opening reception: We are pleased to invite you to the opening reception of the exhibition The Smallest Show on Earth: Paper Theaters Explored on Friday, Sept. 23 from 6-8 p.m. On view September 23, 2022 - January 22, 2023 About the exhibition: This exhibition celebrates the long history and recent creative innovations in this unique art form. Paper theatres, also known as toy theatres, originated to promote productions in Victorian Era London. They were printed on paperboard sheets and sold as kits at the concession stand of an opera house, playhouse, or vaudeville theater. These paper theatre hobbyists ended up learning a great deal about scenic design, lighting effects, sound effects, musical underscoring, acting, directing — all through a paper theatre toy. The theaters gradually declined in popularity during the late 19th and early 20th centuries but have enjoyed a resurgence in interest in recent years among many puppeteers, filmmakers, theater historians, and hobbyists. This exhibition will introduce new audiences to this playful and engaging craft and offer the opportunity for a wide range of theatrically themed, complimentary programs. Curated by Scott Paulson. We all experience loss and grief in life, but most of us are never taught how to navigate these experiences. "In Grieving Is Self-Compassion", a half-day virtual workshop presented by BELOVED Compassion Network, you'll discover the tools for safely facing your pain and cultivating self-compassion for yourself in this difficult time. Certified Compassion Practice facilitator Nancy Fowler will lead this workshop integrating the contemplative, meditative steps of the Compassion Practice as a way to navigate the grief process, care for yourself as you face your pain, and heal after loss.

Everyone in the community is invited to Light Up a Life, a special candle-lighting ceremony to celebrate the people whose lives have warmed their hearts and whose memories illuminate their lives. The Elizabeth Hospice will host this family-friendly event on Sunday, November 13, 2022, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., at the California Center for the Arts at 340 N. Escondido Blvd in Escondido. Light Up a Life blends inspirational messages, music, and a memorial ceremony to lift the hearts of those touched by loss, illness or sorrow. Admission and parking are free. Registration is required by November 4, here! All attendees will have the opportunity to light a candle during the memorial ceremony. In support of The Elizabeth Hospice’s nonprofit mission, a donation of $50 is suggested. Individuals can receive a 2022 keepsake ornament with a $100 donation or a personalized ornament with a donation of $250 or more.
