Vocalist Robin Adler and her husband, guitarist Dave Blackburn are in their fifteenth year of leading their band Mutts of the Planet, who perform a show based entirely around the music of the great Joni Mitchell. Mitchell’s extraordinary career has spanned over forty years and has freely traveled across numerous musical frontiers during that time, including folk, through radio-friendly pop/rock and further, into jazz. Her long and diverse career has provided fertile ground for Mutts of the Planet to create a fascinating show that draws from all of Joni Mitchell’s artistic phases. As we enter National Volunteer Month, we celebrate our volunteers who advocate tirelessly for the every-day needs of our foster youth in San Diego County. Research shows that foster youth with a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) volunteer receive the resources they need to thrive sooner and longer. About the exhibition: Clara E. Breed directed the San Diego Public Library for 42 years as a public servant advocating on numerous fronts, including the promotion of youth services, championing a child’s right to read by encouraging international and multicultural collections, undertaking an unprecedented expansion of the City’s Library system, and most significantly, advocating on behalf of the hundreds of Japanese American families that were incarcerated due to Executive Order 9066. Breed was ahead of her time in her interest to promote cultural understanding and fight prejudice. Her steadfast commitment and activism broadens our insights about the role libraries play in working toward a more equitable, diverse, and inclusionary future. "Call to Serve: Clara E. Breed & The Japanese American Incarceration" is co-organized by guest curators Susan Hasegawa, Linda Salem, and the San Diego Public Library. This exhibition was made possible by a collaboration between the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture, the Japanese American National Museum, the Japanese American Historical Society of San Diego, San Diego State University, and Simmons University Archives. Ukrainian Artists Hold Art Exhibition and Fundraiser in San Diego to Help Ukrainians in Need “Ukrainian Voice. Your Choice!” Art Exhibition & Fundraiser When: Exhibit Opening June 14 from 4-8 p.m., show runs daily 2-8 p.m. June 15 - 17 Where: Bread and Salt, 1955 Julian Avenue, San Diego, CA 92113. A Ukrainian couple Eugenia and Samson Brodskiy were away from their home country when the war began in February and have been unable to return. They have been collecting works by Ukrainian artists to help them through these horrific times and find hope. “We have been so fortunate to find kindness and support in San Diego for our family and because of this we want to share our feelings and show powerful images of the war through the eyes of modern Ukrainian artists.” The art exhibit,“ Ukrainian Voice. Your choice!,“ which also features video and audio installations, will be held at the Bread & Salt gallery in Logan Heights. It will show the war from the beginning of the invasion to the present day, tell stories of bravery, sadness, desolation and hope captured in real time as the conflict rages on. The show is free to the public. All proceeds from purchases of art work and donations will be sent directly to Ukrainian families in need. The exhibit opens on June 14, hours 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will run through June 17, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. daily. We are working with a local San Diego non-profit organization, MH Community Preservation a 501 (c)(3) EIN#82-3030713. Donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. “Unfortunately, every day brings a lot of losses, a lot of pain and we realized that we can not stand on the sidelines.
