This class is part of the Yiddish in Transliteration course. It can be taken as part of the course or separately. Teacher: Jana Mazurkiewicz Meisarosh Jana Mazurkiewicz Meisarosh is a PhD candidate in the Slavic Department at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She is working on her dissertation on Yiddish Theater in Communist Warsaw. Originally from Poland, Jana holds a Master of Arts degree in Polish Philology and Jewish Studies from the University of Wrocław. Jana is not only a practicing academic but also an active theater artist and critic. She is an actor, director, playwright, and producer of Yiddish theater. In October 2017, she moved to San Diego and launched the Yiddish Arts and Academics Association of North America (YAAANA).

Learn how art and activism connect with the Women's Museum of California's series of "Craftivism Classes". In this class, students will learn the history of yarn bombing and create individual crochet squares that will be attached together to form a yarn bomb. The community yarn bomb will become part of the Women's Museum collection and students will be able to take home crochet needles. This class will be taught by Maritza Garcia, a local yarn bomb artist. She creates crochet artwork that she attached outside around trees and walls. Her work is in alignment with a fairly new history of women who crochet artwork as activism. Her work can be found in Barrio Logan and at the Women’s Museum of California. Maritza is a local who was raised in the 92114 zip code. From yarn bombing to femmage, the Women's Museum's Craftivism Classes invites a local artist featured in the museum's current "Crafting Feminism" exhibit to teach participants a crafting skill and how they can use it in their activism. The 2022 Masquerade on-stage costume competition (or Cosplay Competition for those who favor that term), a tradition at Comic-Con from almost its beginning, will be Saturday evening, July 23, starting at 8:30 p.m. The event celebrates not only the contribution of costuming to the popular arts, but also the amazing creations that our attendees make and bring to the convention. The costume presentations, intermission entertainment, and then awards presentation will run a bit over 2 hours and be set in the Convention Center’s 4,000-seat Ballroom 20. Not a dance or party as the name may imply, it is more akin to a talent show set on a large stage before an audience, showcasing amazing costumes crafted by our non-professional but still very creative and talented attendees. Most costumes will be impressive re-creations from movies, television, anime, comic books, fantasy, Broadway shows, video games, and history; others will be completely original designs from the imagination. Some will be solo entries; others will be groups with a shared theme. All genres are welcome, and no purchased costumes are allowed. The event is free to participate in, or to have a seat in the audience, for anyone with a convention badge valid for Saturday. Masquerade tickets assure a seat, but not required: Rather than see attendees line up for hours to be certain they get a seat, free tickets will be given out at 12 noon on Saturday to those lining up near Ballroom 20 and will be available again from 3-5 p.m. at the Masquerade Desk until all are given out. Once you have your ticket you are guaranteed a seat, and you can go enjoy other programming and line up later knowing there’s a chair for you. After the ticket-holders line has gone into the ballroom, it becomes open seating for anyone who shows up until the room is filled. From the museum: In his new site-specific commissioned installation, Primordial Refuge, local artist Aaron Glasson explores the concept of home in another climate reality. With climate change being a pressing issue that impacts people all over the world, Glasson’s thought-provoking show provides innovative solutions for how homes could adapt to fluctuating weather conditions. Featuring sculpture, installation, and painting, the exhibition offers visitors a unique way to engage and contribute to the continuing discourse about climate change while considering the role of art in today’s world. Pianist Wynona Wang was selected as First Prize winner of the 2018 Concert Artists Guild International Competition, which is just the latest in a series of impressive first prize performances, along with the 2017 Wideman International Piano Competition in Louisiana. Wynona was also awarded the 2019 “Charlotte White” Career Grant awarded by the Salon de Virtuosi in New York City. Come see her perform at the California Center for the Arts on Sunday, May 22 at 3 p.m..

The pieces on A Weekend in Paris: The Salon and The Masquerade emerged from these glamorous salons and range from the charming piano duo by Debussy and Sarasate’s devilishly virtuosic Carmen Fantasy to Ravel and Caplet’s decadent and macabre evocations of Edgar Allan Poe’s story "The Masque of the Red Death."
