Note: This exhibition was taken down two weeks early. "Text Me When You Get Home" is a new solo exhibition by border artist Diana Benavidez, and will be on view Mar. 12 through May 13, 2022. About the exhibition: Text Me When You Get Home explores habits and rituals adopted by women against lurking predators in public spaces. This collection of piñatas investigates objects transformed into self-defense weapons and addresses common practices embraced on a daily basis as a form of protection against sexual harassment and violence. Her art practice explores piñata-making as a method of expression and storytelling. Diana builds piñatas that reflect upon her experiences growing up along the border, her identity, and culture. Her work is known for introducing materials not commonly found in traditional piñatas including media and technology. Diana received a BA in Visual Arts from UC San Diego and her art has been exhibited in Mexico, Canada, and the US. Yolanda López: A Studio of One’s Own will reflect on one of the most important Chicano/a/x artist and activist who worked in California over the past five decades, with a special focus on the art produced during her time as an MFA (1979) in the Department of Visual Arts. Yolanda López was born in San Diego in 1942 and passed in 2021. The title for the panel echoes the playful take on her first solo museum exhibition Portrait of the Artist at Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, Downtown. The exhibition presents a compendium of López’s work from the 1970s and 1980s, when she created a vivid body of paintings, drawings, and collages that investigate and reimagine representations of women within Chicano/a/x culture and society, and where UCSD looms large in the work. This spring semester the Hyde Art Gallery will be transformed into an aquatic temple dedicated to the Seven Sisters of the Pleiades. Meticulously captured by photographer Suda House, the daughters of Atlas have secretly returned to earth, inhabiting Grossmont College’s Performing and Visual Art Center, to spread awareness of the impending doom of a changing climate and humanity’s wasteful use and disposal of single-use plastics. Through these large-scale celestial photographs and an accompanying installation of plastic refuse, House seeks humanity’s reprieve from the worst-case scenarios of ecological collapse and postulates a solution grounded in history, scientific data, and mythic plausibility. Climate change is here and House’s narrative premise highlights the peril our progeny will confront. While many have ignored the inevitable, few have taken action and others have pleaded up to the sky, calling for help to avert the inescapable destruction of our world. "Saving Grace" will be on display at Grossmont College’s Hyde Art Gallery from Tuesday, February 22 until Saturday, April 9. An artist reception will be held on Tuesday, March 22 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Walk-in visitation is available for all students currently enrolled in any on-campus classes or any staff and faculty already approved to be on campus.
