A Weaving Workshop with Rebecca Smith Join us as creative weaving artist Rebecca Smith leads a two-day workshop in the technique of inlay, a process for weaving pictorial and geometric designs on a loom. In this workshop, participants will weave designs simultaneously with the sheer, transparent background or ground cloth. When the finished piece is hung, light travels through the background cloth to frame the design, which remains opaque. Students can bring their own designs and yarn or use the materials Rebecca provides. If students need a loom, they can rent an Ashford table loom from San Diego Creative Weavers Guild which measures 30″ deep and 24″ wide. Students must be a member of the Guild to be able to rent the looms. Guild membership is $35 per year. The workshop is intended for weavers who are familiar with the workings of a 4-harness loom or rigid heddle loom. Students should arrive with a warped loom; instructions for warping the loom will be sent in advance. Students will need to purchase 16/1 linen yarn warping their looms (cost is $20 per ¼ pound cone; sources will be provided). The instructor will provide specifications for materials needed and will send warping requirements to students prior to the workshop. The instructor will provide a selection of yarns to supplement what the students bring and will provide designs for the students to follow as they weave. For designers, creatives, and the general public interested in natural color in textiles and its possible modifications. Learn from the experts! This class is led by Mildred and Sama Barrios, who run a Mexico-based natural color studio called SUULA. In this hands-on workshop, participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of modifying natural color. In the realm of natural dyeing, modifiers involve the partial or total application of substances such as vinegar, iron oxide, and baking soda, among others, to fabric dyed with natural dyes. This process alters the tone of the dye, allowing for a wider variety of colors or the creation of patterns and designs on the fabric. Some dyes react more strongly than others to these modifiers. Join Catalyst of San Diego and Imperial Counties, Art Pharmacy, and San Ysidro Health for a live panel discussion on the power of social prescribing in adolescent mental health care. This in-person event will explore how non-clinical interventions — like arts engagement and community connection — can improve health outcomes, reduce loneliness, and reshape how we approach care for young people. This partnership was born out of the Arts & Intersections Collaborative, a Catalyst-led initiative designed to explore how the arts can intersect with other sectors—like health, education, and workforce development—to address complex social challenges. The collaboration helped lay the groundwork for bringing this initiative to San Diego, with a specific focus on supporting youth mental health. The result is a first-of-its-kind pilot in San Diego, introducing arts-based social prescribing as a new model for improving adolescent mental health in the region. Attendees will hear directly from the leaders of this groundbreaking initiative and learn how cross-sector partnerships are fueling a movement to advance whole-person health in San Diego and beyond. The event will include a panel discussion and Q&A featuring Chris Appleton, CEO of Art Pharmacy, Matt D’Arrigo of the Clare Rose Foundation, and Dr. Priti Ojha of San Ysidro Health Center to discuss the impact of social prescribing and the new partnership within San Ysidro Health. Be a part of this important conversation to help shape a more connective, creative, and community centered approach to help in our region.
